7 of 10 of Americans Feel Safer Around Guns

CRYSiiSx2

Recommended Posts

An overwhelming seven in 10 Americans say they would feel safer living in a neighborhood where individuals could own a gun for self defense, the latest indication that support for comprehensive gun control is fading.

Looks like the gun grabbers aren't getting closer to their goal!

Glad to see more people are siding with liberty. But unfortunately in some states like Connecticut.....

gun-lines-firearm-gun-registration.jpg

Gun owners had to wait in huge lines to register their "assault" weapons, or guns that hold more than 10 rounds or face jail time or a huge fine.

Criminals aren't using registered guns, etc etc and so on. This whole approach is still silly.

Well, that's what happens when you pass laws based on a knee-jerk reaction, and don't use common sense.

I assume this is about guns which aren't being used, right? Do these people also feel safer in the world with nuclear bombs everywhere?

Anyone who feels "safer" with a gun isn't getting the point. First, why do you need one to make you "safe", and two, why does this question even need to be brought up? If a gun makes you feel safe, there shouldn't be a point where it makes you feel unsafe, as in, this poll should have never taken place. There shouldn't be a "safe" or "unsafe" answer. It shows the problem of fear which comes along with and occurs with guns. It's an illusion of safety, and nothing more. It's illusionary "safety."

I told you a million times before that no one thinks that.

Edit: The USA would be the sole example that lax gun rights improve safety, but it's not.

I'm definitely in the minority then. I've never owned a gun myself, had guns in the house owned by other family members for hunting & target shooting, it never made me feel safer. I love shooting guns and I'm a surprisingly good shot, but never cared to own a gun myself. When I was a baby I had a gun pointed at me for several hours until someone came home and took the gun away. After that, no more guns in the house. My Dad used to hunt, don't know where he kept his guns. When I was a teen one of my parents friends shot his wife dead then took his own life. I had a friend who was an attorney, she was shot & killed by the husband of a woman she was representing in a divorce. For me, guns do not confer safety, in fact, just the opposite.

People who have murder on their minds, they just wouldn't do it if it wasn't so push-button easy to just....pull the trigger. If that's true we should also say the same thing for countries with gigantic militaries (sp?). If it wasn't so easy to solve their problems with getting along with others through the barrel of a gun, maybe they'd find another alternative. If a bill was passed that the lawmakers had to all be flown in to the battlefield on a combat rotation through the war cycle, their minds wouldn't function like hammers treating problems like nails, and they'd no doubt grow a lot more creative with conflict resolution.

I can think of plenty of people I wouldn't feel safer being around if I knew they had guns, which has nothing to do with the guns and plenty to do with the people. :)

More evidence that guns are not a left/right issue no matter how much the President and the Democrats want it to be:

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Liberals-find-comfort-level-in-NPR-of-gun-clubs-5107330.php#photo-5669469

Marlene Hoeber is feisty, tattooed, transgender, a self-described feminist, a queer activist - and a crack shot with her favorite "toys," guns of just about every kind.

One thing she's not - and proud of it - is a member of the National Rifle Association.

"We make ourselves a special place where we don't have to hear about the 'Kenyan Muslim socialist' in the White House," said Hoeber, a biotech equipment mechanic who says she's politically "somewhere around Emma Goldman," the turn-of-the-20th century anarchist.

Whether the poll in the OP is distorted or not, it is clear that gun rights have strong support across the full political spectrum and people in increasing numbers have realized that the solutions do not include limiting law abiding citizens access to firearms. I also happen to agree with my friends in the Liberal Gun Club that firearms ownership is a social justice and human rights issue.

The nuclear bomb argument is tired and flawed - it destroys both parties, the only 'self defense' achieved with a nuclear bomb is mutually assured destruction. It's like arguing that a grenade is for self defense.

Also, tell that to the elderly getting knocked out by a game, or the women victimized every day because men in general are bigger than women.

I'll repeat a saying I've heard, "god made man, Sam Colt made them equal".

A total propaganda lie, Sam Colt just created a new inequality: those who can shoot fast and straight and those who can't.

Smuggled in from Mexico

I'm joking of course, I have no idea but assume that the great number of ilegal guns weren't stolen from peoples homes. I would guess stolen from retailers, warehouses etc... Someplace where they could be stolen in bulk.

That may be true... but you can develop those skills.

An 80 year old woman would be hard pressed to develop the strength of a 25 year old male. You should've posed your argument based on the ability to purchase a firearm or not, it would have been more effective.

that seems to be an illusion because all studies seem to indicate that 90% are smuggled over state lines.

It is a very funny video made by police and defense professionals and a TV station about how safe those "who feel safe with a gun" really are. I would recommend you have a look whenever you have time.

I just went to my smart phone and saw it was a video, and checked it out.

We have a whole thread of people stopping a criminal with a weapon, with a recent example of an elderly woman shooting two 'knockout' attackers. How was she living in a 'fantasy' world?

This whole experiment is set up to fail anyway. The attacker knowingly entered and even acted like there was no threat to himself. With real gunfire returning, the attacker's accuracy would diminish, at the very least, or he may just flee. Not too mention, that kid with the concealed pistol obviously isn't very practiced with a concealed weapon.... it isn't a problem for me to draw, maybe because I've practiced?

Why don't we switch the shooter and the kid that was supposed to defend the class.... I bet he doesn't get as many kills.

So, you have a anecdotal collection of 0.00001% of crime stopped because the criminal was less handy with a gun than the intended victims? I am impressed!

So, she is living in a fantasy world the rest of us can't possibly experience, got it.

I'm guessing you have no rebuttal for the criticisms of the experiment. You support a non controlled experiment over an actual real life instance (well several, but for the sake of this argument, I'm focusing on the one example I gave). At least you're not being dishonest, even though you're ignoring the major flaws in the experiment.

And yet people actually do succesfully save themselves from harm using fire arms. I would rather have the option open than closed and would rather the government not write any more additional legislation on top of the 20k+ gun laws currently on the books. If you don't want to own a gun fine, but don't presume to make that decision for other law abiding citizens.

If a majority of the citizens of the state of Connecticut want to willingly give up their rights then I say more power to them. I am sad to know that so many people of that frame of mind are living in one place but there you go.... I wonder how many people will move away because of this?
