Britons Die in Jordan Bus Crash

Seven Britons have died in a bus crash near the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, local officials say.

The British tourists were travelling on a coach that collided with a small pick-up truck on their way back from visiting the top tourist attraction.

A spokeswoman for the British Embassy in Amman said that the injured had been airlifted to hospital.

British ambassador Chris Prentice said it was "sad news" and that his prayers were with the bereaved families.

Jordanians were also on board the bus.

"The Jordanian authorities have responded immediately and those involved - the survivors - are being airlifted back to Amman," Mr Prentice said.

"It was His Majesty the King's express wish."

Prince Charles, due to visit Petra on Friday while on a tour of the country, was said to be "deeply shocked" by the incident.

The injured had been airlifted to Pafileh Military Hospital, while embassy staff were attempting to contact next of kin.

"The main objective is to ensure the survivors are given the best possible treatment."

He added: "Our prayers are with the families and with the wounded."

Exact details of the accident were unclear.

"We are still waiting for news as the accident happened some way from the embassy in Amman," an embassy spokeswoman said.

"Consulate staff are on their way to the scene and have confirmed that Britons are involved.

A Jordan Tourism Board spokeswoman in London said the driver and guide were Jordanian.

"It's not yet clear just how many people were on board or if there were any other nationals among the passengers."
