Conflicts Unchanged in Birthplace of WWI

The 1914 assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo came in the midst of a bitter power struggle among major European powers in the Balkans. One hundred years and three devastating wars later, peace still eludes the multi-ethnic region.

Among the rows of apartment buildings in the far eastern section of Sarajevo, near the airport, murderer Gavrilo Princip remains a hero to this day.

Some Bosnian Serbs living in this neighborhood openly venerate their most famous son. On a cloudless Sunday in June 1914, Princip, a student who sported a moustache, shot and killed the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, with a single bullet to the carotid artery, fired from a 7.65 Browning pistol.

I think being from the USA makes it difficult to comprehend this type of multi-generational hatred. I read an article where some of these people took a reporter out to a grave yard after a night of heavy vodka consumption, dug up a WWI general and p***ed all over his corpse. The reporter was like "what the?" and the people told him "he was a very bad man"

Hatfields and McCoys feud was a bit different and a lot less significant than the media and modern history would have people think. I grew up in the Appalachians and recently moved back here. It wasn't all that like they glorify and romanticize. Now they talk it up cause they are making a reality show about the region to sell moonshine...go figure.

Ethnic and religous hate will never go away, regardless how many years have passed until someone, somewhere stops teaching the next generation that they are supposed to be intolerant of those that are different.

Well if the Serbs Turks Austrians certain Croats and others would leave Bosnia to be Bosnia then we would not have the same over and over again. For some reason everyone always wanted a piece or all of Bosnia. One of the smallest countries in the world with some of the biggest problems. well maybe once all in the region have joined the EU, the EU with its Nobel Peace prize will bring about peace.

Speaking of certain Croats, it’s the provincial mentality on top of politics that makes them so obsessed with ripping Bosnia and Herzegovina apart. Not only it’s a political platform that offers nothing but extreme nationalism, it’s also their belief Zagreb is somehow more fancy than Sarajevo.

B&H entering EU would actually calm that nationalistic snobbery down.
