Gearing up for a new era in Earth observation

21 January 2014 Aiming for launch at the end of March, the first satellite built specifically for Europe’s ambitious Copernicus environmental monitoring programme is now in the last stages of testing before being shipped to French Guiana for liftoff.

Rising to the challenges of global change and the need to manage the environment more effectively, Copernicus offers a set of key information services for a multitude of environmental and civil security applications.

Sentinel-1

Sentinel-1 is the first satellite dedicated to Europe’s Copernicus environmental monitoring programme. This new satellite carries an advanced synthetic aperture radar that works in several specialised modes to provide detailed imagery for monitoring the oceans, including shipping lanes, sea ice and oil spills. It also provides data to map changing land cover, ground deformation, ice shelves and glaciers, and can be used to help emergency response when disasters such as floods strike and to support humanitarian relief efforts at times of crisis.

Sentinel-1A radar deployment

Testing the deployment of the Sentinel-1A radar antenna (in fast motion) in the cleanroom at Thales Alenia Space in Cannes, France. As the satellite is designed to operate in orbit, it is hung from a structure during tests to simulate weightlessness.

The Synthetic Aperture Radar, or SAR, will provide an all-weather day-and-night supply of imagery for services such as the monitoring of Arctic sea-ice extent, routine sea-ice mapping, surveillance of the marine environment, monitoring land-surface for motion risks and mapping to support humanitarian aid and crisis situations.

Sentinel-1A – the first satellite built for the Copernicus environmental monitoring programme – is foreseen for launch this spring from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

Sentinel-3

Dedicated to supplying data for Copernicus services, Sentinel-3 carries a suite of instruments to measure sea-surface temperature, sea- and land-surface temperature and ocean- and land-surface colour. This information will be used to support services related to the marine environment, such as ocean current forecasting and seawater pollution monitoring and wave information for maritime safety. The data will also be used for Copernicus land services, such as fire detection and land-cover mapping.

Sentinel-2

Dedicated to supplying data for Copernicus services, Sentinel-2 will deliver high-resolution optical images for land monitoring, emergency response and security services. The satellite carries a multispectral imager with a swath of 290 km. The imager provides a versatile set of 13 spectral bands spanning from the visible and near infrared to the shortwave infrared, featuring four spectral bands at 10 m, six bands at 20 m and three bands at 60 m spatial resolution.
