seeder Posted January 27, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 27, 2014 This tree causes instant blisters, blindness and death It looks like a regular tree, but the Manchineel can kill you. Everything about it is extremely toxic. If you touch its leaves, they will cause "a strong allergic dermatitis." It's so bad that, if you stay under its foliage while it's raining, the water will cause instant blistering wherever it touches you. It gets much worse. You can't burn the Manchineel's wood because the smoke will cause temporary and even permanent blindness. And if you eat one of its apples, you can die. Although there's no modern medicine records on any fatalities, there are mentions of deaths in historic records. In fact, Christopher Columbus named it "manzanita de la muerte" or little apple of death for that reason. The poisoning symptoms are horrible: http://sploid.gizmodo.com/this-tree-can-kill-you-1505763900
freetoroam Posted January 27, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 27, 2014 Certain Mushrooms come to mind here and they are far more common. Just shows, not everthing on this planet is made for mans benefit, although many a man thinks it is. Surprised none of the governments have got a scientist to bottle this stuff to use on its enemies...or have they?

pallidin Posted January 27, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 27, 2014 Well, hopefully, they will study it enough to find that one or more components of the toxins could fight certain human disease.
Awake2Chaos Posted January 27, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 27, 2014 That's wild. And scary, lol. The video of that guy who managed to get it all over his face was pretty brutal. Noted and filed this one.
