The worst abuse of women and children comes from countries like yours Babs with your high rates of murder and domestic violence. The proliferation of prostitution and drug abuse. Fat filthy businessmen going off to Asian countries to put themselves into little girls and boys...Pornography sold in every newspaper shop and magazine outlet...90% of the internet sex for sale being mammon mad and greed orientated US smut companies...Organised paedophilia and sexual abuse running rampant in the West...I don't think you and your kind actually want to see the degradation happening in your own towns and cities...I would really scare the sh*** out of you...So you look to other countries and cultures as a means of escape. Working the phone hotline (for domestic violence)_ working at the shelters and living with domestic violence, myself( while I was growing up) plus having personal violent relationships, later, also qualifies me to talk about this subject. Caring for battered women and children at the shelters qualifies me more than you to talk about the violence women experience. What have you done in this field? You would be shocked at some of the facts I could give you not to mention the personal stories of beatings, torture and murder of women that I have been exposed to. Yeah, I think I have a handle on it, vimjams. I think I know why you are so upset today ...it's election day. What's wrong vim, getting a little wired? I haven't hidden my head in the sand, I've been out in the trenches. I know for a fact that the middle east is a horrible place for women and it is hurting alis' pride_ that is why she is telling us about herself and her female relatives. Hopefully, it will broaden your horizons and make you more tolerate of other cultures, you seem to be against us here in the U.S. I know that their is a price to pay when you travel like that. Congratulations on having been to Europe several times by the way, i am sure having been to Europe really makes you an expert on the ME . She was attacked by a certified nurse's assistant at a Sacramento facility, who was angered she'd soiled herself. "He choked me and went and broke my neck and broke my wrist," said Love. Helen Love died two days after her interview. Her assailant got a year in county jail and a CBS News investigation found that three other employees at the same Sacramento facility had been convicted for abuse, which should have barred them from nursing home work. The nursing home industry agrees on the need for stiffer background checks, but disagrees abuse is widespread. "The congressman himself said the great majority of long-term care in our nation is excellent. There are people every day that are working very hard to provide that care," said Charles H. Roadman II, president of the American Health Care Association (AHCA), a nursing home trade group that represents 12,000 nonprofit and for-profit centers and homes for the elderly and disabled. Waxman, the top Democrat on the House Government Reform Committee, which oversees spending and other operations, said Congress should re-estalish an abolished federal law that boosts nursing home spending. The Boren amendment would guarantee that the nation's nearly 17,000 homes do a better job of screening, training and counseling their staff. Roughly 1.5 million seniors live in nursing homes. Waxman is also introducing a plan that would require criminal background checks on nursing home staff and impose tougher standards on homes with violations. The AHCA supports a federal criminal background check system for potential employees. "Recruiting, training and keeping frontline nursing staff are among the most important things we can do to ensure our patients continue to receive quality skilled nursing care," said Roadman. But center operators said abuse is not the norm in nursing homes and many staff members deserve praise. "Our patients are like family, and incidents like those described here today are extremely rare," said Sharon Sellers, vice president of operations at Washington Home, a nearly 200-bed center in the District of Columbia. Bruce Rosenthal, spokesman for the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, said Congress should focus on the troubled centers, rather than create cumbersome standards for all. "We strongly believe nursing homes that exhibit consistently poor performance should either clean up their act or be put out of business," said Rosenthal, whose group represents 5,600 not-for-profit homes and centers. For instance, a resident was killed when another resident with a history of abusive behavior picked her up and slammed her into a wall. In another case, a resident's nose was broken by an attendant who hit her. An attendant raped another resident in her room. It was not clear how many people were abused. In some cases, the report said, an abuse citation referred to a single victim; in others a single case affected several residents. Investigators said many violations are neither detected nor reported, leading officials to believe the problem is underestimated. The report also found: more than 40 percent, or 3,800 abuse violations, were only reported after formal complaints from residents, their families or community advocates. 1,327 homes were cited for more than one abuse violation in the two-year period; 305 homes were cited for three or more abuse violations, and 192 nursing homes were cited for five or more abuse violations. source Last update: October 29, 2004 at 11:07 PM Family blames New Brighton nursing home for heartache Donna Halvorsen, Star Tribune October 30, 2004 NURSINGHOME1030 Jim Krongard, 74, a retired steelworker with three children and eight grandchildren, was battling brain cancer, but his family thought he was doing well after surgery. His health seemed to be improving, they said, and he was to start a new cancer drug after his last round of chemotherapy. But the family's hopes for his recovery were lost when he died from an infection nearly two months after he moved Aug. 3 into Trevilla of New Brighton. State investigators announced Thursday they have cited Trevilla for neglecting his care. To recuperate after brain surgery, Krongard went into the nursing home just down the road from his New Brighton home so that his wife, June, could visit often. Trevilla also wasn't far from where son Bruce worked, so he visited his father on his lunch hour, sometimes reading to him from the newspaper. Krongard's other sons, Randy and Paul, also were in and out frequently. But instead of improving his father's health, Randy Krongard said, the home cut his life short. Investigators said they could not prove that neglect caused Krongard's death, "but certainly he developed problems that we believer were caused" by the neglect, said Arnold Rosenthal, director of the state Office of Health Facilities Complaints. Said Randy Krongard: "He was in line to receive some special treatment that might have wiped out the brain tumor. He never got that far because he got the [staph infection] and died from it." State investigators found that Krongard was placed in jeopardy on Aug. 18, the day he was moved from one room into another with a roommate who had a staph infection and oozing sores on one leg. Krongard died on Sept. 28 at United Hospital in St. Paul of that same infection, along with pneumonia, anemia, malnutrition, kidney failure and other problems. His physician told state investigators that if he had been asked about the move, he would not have given permission. He said staff "have to be careful with infection-control practice" in such circumstances. Not only did the men share a bathroom, but staff workers sometimes intermingled the two men's belongings, the investigators found. At one point, Krongard was dressed in his roommate's soiled clothes. Another time, said Randy, his father wore his roommate's glasses. "So here's something that came right off [the roommate's] flesh that was contaminated, right to my dad," he said.
