My View on Ancient Mega Structures

OK.

It was us. We all did it. Pretty much all of ancient wonders were built by us, with our ingenuity and without any outside intervention.

But...the clue to understand our shrouded past lays in the Tower of Babel story, I guess.

Someone out there did not like our potential. So they messed with us. And we still feel the effect of tampering. We became increasingly incoherent, superstitious, and overly violent.

In my opinion the Tower of Babel story which has Sumerian origins is just mythology to explain why there is different languages.Just like creation myths, Man has imagination to explain things before scientific inquiry came along.

Don't worry, the right people will be along shortly to tell you that you are wrong.

i guess my question would be: how does the building of mega structures mess with us? what about it was tampering?

My view of Ancien Megastructures is that they are really big and really old.

I couldn't agree more that ancient man is responsible for these wonders, and it's refreshing not to see an argument for ancient aliens or Atlanteans or the Spaghetti Monster, or what have you.

But I think it's more complicated than you might imagine. Like Davros said, the Tower of Babel belongs to the genre of creation myths and was crafted to explain why there are so many different languages. That is of course overly simplistic to the modern mind because we have the benefit of centuries of historical inquiry and ever-increasing science—and we know there have always been countless languages among human beings. In fact, one can say with confidence that many more languages have died out through time than exist today.

No one is certain exactly where this mythic ziggurat was built or even exactly when, and the biblical version of it might represent nothing more than a fictional construction. However, many scholars believe this is the ziggurat rebuilt in Babylon and called Entemenanki. This dates it to the Chaldean dynasty of Babylon and hence places the rebuilding of the Entemenanki ziggurat in the sixth century BCE. The reason this has historical merit is that it's the same period during which Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar conquered the Hebrews and brought them in captivity to Babylon. The Hebrews would've been well familiar with this ziggurat because of it.

I go to this length only to establish a plausible timeline. This is well into the Early Bronze Age, so tremendous swaths of history had already occurred in the ancient Near East. The Great Pyramid of Giza, one of mankind's most awesome achievements, was already some 2,000 years old when Entemenanki was built in Babylon. The Hittites and their great city in Anatolia had already come and gone. The great fortresses of the Mycenaeans had already come and gone. The great palaces of the Minoans had already come and gone.

So obviously the ziggurat that ended up in biblical lore had little if any effect on the wider scope of history. Add to this the fact that weapons have been found in prehistoric Near Eastern graves, and we can even say with confidence that mankind possessed violent tendencies well before the rise of great civilizations. Also, this says nothing of Mesoamerican colossi such as the temple pyramids and huge cities erected by the Mayans, Aztecs, Inca, and others.

In other words, history is a hell of a lot more complicated than it might seem at first glance.

My view of Ancien Megastructures is that they are really big and really old.

Well said! :w00t:

When it comes to this topic, I always have to step back a bit. These giant structures were massive undertakings that sometimes used building materials from hundreds of miles away. I don't doubt that it was humans that created these structures, my greatest question is for what purpose. People don't do things like this on a mass scale on a whim. Something had to inspire them.

I like that ^ lol. Maybe even a hella hella helluva lot more complicated than it might seem at first glance.

Someone as studied as yourself, would know that much more than most.

I'd say Tower of Babel story is a vague metaphor of what really happened. The whole point is that someone out there saw our potential, then figured that we can be a major threat to them someday. So they did something to us to...DOWNGRADE us. The tower itself is just a metaphor for our potentials and capabilities.

So who are these mystery folk downgrading humanity? Why interfere with us? Via what methods? What standards did they use to determine we were "troublesome"? If this myth is true, do you have any sort of methodology for separating the "true" myths fromt the "false" myths?

If you want this to be a theory that explains something, then make it /explain/ something. Use your critical thinking skills.

C'mon...I am just speculating. Don't be too nit-picky. You remind me of those hardcore Trekkies...

I believe there is a evolution of architectural design and how they relate in cultures, no alien or atlantains, but common design.

Well, this is an unfortunate turn of events. We went from man's potential to create colossi to a mysterious "someone out there" screwing with our technological potential. Jaylemurph is correct: who exactly was or were this "someone out there" and why would they feel threatened by us?

In any case they (whoever "they" are) failed miserably, I guess. I mean, from ancient times humankind progressed collectively to much greater heights of intelligence and ability. The average medieval cathedral in Europe, for example, represents a level of architecture and engineering many times greater in sophistication than any of the colossi of ancient times. The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul or the Duomo in Florence are perfect examples of this. And this says nothing of modern-day architecture and engineering (think of the Sydney Opera House). Then, of course, there is the fact that we've been sending people into space for over half a century, and in most of our homes we have personal computers of technological sophistication that weren't even imagined fifty years ago.

In other words, the more time goes on, the more exponentially advanced we become. If mud-brick and stone-masonry constructions thousands of years ago were frightening these mysterious "someones," I can't imaging how terrified of us they must be now.

I bet it's thumbs. They were freaked out by our thumbs.

Maybe our incoherent superstitious violent nature gave rise to the myth?

Only if we had prehensile ones. Which we don't, or he wouldn't have shoes.

I quite liked an analyses of the metaphor to describe a breakdown in communications owning to 'specialization' of techniques in the building process, the more technical, the more the need to invent words to describe processes and concepts...but yeah, our ancestors did it all themselves as the only difference between them and us is specialised knowledge base, because we all have the same thumbs and toes they did....

You should talk to Cladking. Specialization of knowledge is a particular bugbear for him.

I would think that any super advanced spacefarin civilization that had arrived here in the distant past and been terrified of the threat we posed as we stumbled out of our caves would have been quite capable of simply sterilyzing our planet.

It would surely have been simpler and quicker then the millenia of subterfuge that some people seem to think the aliens have committed.

You are so right. :tu: Esepecialy on durability of those buildings. That opera house will stay upright longer than piramides and other ainchent buildings.

We won't see what will stay from our great civilisation in 2000 years.
