Did dark matter wipe out the dinosaurs ?

Could a disc of dark matter on the galactic plane have triggered an apocalyptic asteroid collision ?

While there is little doubt that a devastating asteroid impact was a major factor in the extinction of the dinosaurs, some theoretical physicists are considering whether there may have been an external factor at play that tipped the odds in favor of an impact taking place.

Interesting idea. It sounds like they have a lot more work to do though. Even though it is cool to see dark matter creeping into astrophysicist's hypothesis lately, they admittedly have a "very weak" correlation to the solar system passing through the galactic midway point. It is a good exercise and I hope to see more like it.

When did science become clutching at straws??

You are going to demonstrate that this IS clutching at straws in a scientific way I presume. I assume you will be presenting your evidence to demonstrate that the hypothesis is false.

After all you wouldn't want your comment mistaken as a pointless post by someone that doesn't understand the science involved would you?

Dark matter/ black holes/ the earth is flat ........ all just science trying to give justification to what it does not yet understand

https://www.google.c...KrXqReX5Oh4521A

From your link:

Prof Frenk explained that there is no definitive proof yet that the dark matter theories need a "paradigm shift", but he remains positive that an answer will be found soon.

Also, no one ever really believed the earth was flat expect fundamentalists. The Greeks knew it to be a sphere and the oft reported fear of sailors thinking that they might fall of the edge is fantasy.

And black holes exist, so I don't know why that is lumped in there.

Where is your fundamental proof of black holes?

From what I read, black holes are a sorely debated "idea"

Relativity predicts black holes and we have tons of observation evidence. I am not aware of any debates about their existence, simply the details involved.

You must know something Mr Hawking has missed!

You may want to catch up on youre reading. Black holes are well established by observational data over the last decade plus. They not only exist but are prevalent and have predictable properties.

Hawking is referring to the behavior of matter at the event horizon, he is not debating the existence of massive gravitational wells (black holes). This is in response to a long debate about whether or not information is completely lost at the event horizon. You should read your own posts before using them as evidence.

Since you're new here I haven't figured out if you're just trying to be contrary or not.

Did you even read the article you linked or just the headline? Hawking has proposed that imformation is not completely devoured forever within a black hole. That apparent horizions can exist where information gets trapped, then released back into the universe.

Your question might be resulted by the fact that you are not reading or did read the real stuff in relation to black holes.

Hawking did, at one time, have a bet regarding the nature of black holes but has since rejected his theory and paid the bet in full. http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/2004/jul/22/hawking-loses-black-hole-bet

What, exactly, Dark matter is we don't know but we know it must be there in order for the universe to operate as observed. New technology coming on line over the next few years will hopefully answer the question 'What is dark matter?"

Here a post that I already posted in another thread in relation to SH actual findings:

The title There are no black holes here and in the media is misleading as Hawking didn´t say that. His new theory is more related

to the event horizon and its effects on matter. The existence of matter absorbing objects aka Black Holes were never taken into

question by Hawking. So there is no need to decrease his reputation and the results of his ongoing research.

If you take the time to read the whole article on the dark matter disrupting the ort cloud it sounds possible. Interesting anyway, thanks for posting UM Bot.

I've heard the premise before, just not with dark matter thrown in. It is certainly plausible.

Not sure what you're agenda is here as you coming off being hostile but you have no idea what you are talking about with regard to the latest discoveries in astronomy and astrophysics. I suggest you do a bit of research before posting here about how little science knows.

Would not a passing/colliding dwarf galaxy offer the same?

I am wondering why choose "Dark Matter" as a candidate, when dark matter remains so mysterious to us all. As far as I know, it's existence alone remains hypothetical at this point in time.

This article provides a different "take" on the whole question of Dark Matter, and whether it exists:

Maybe the dinosaurs were wiped out in the great flood.

Well, the dinos went away 65 million years ago so teh timelines don't wuite match up unles you are into the 6k year old earth theory..
