Ref Yahoo News, If Scotland becomes independent from the U.K., Shetlanders are to hold a referendum to decide whether they want to stay with Scotland. They say that they have Viking origins and are closer to Norway.

This'll complicate things nicely. Shetland has Sullom Voe, the big oil terminal, doesn't it. Which Mr. Salmon was hoping would provide the backbone of Scotland's economy once they'd got their Freedom.

Ha ha, be careful what you start.

A link would have been nice to back up your claim.

i highlight this in a post in another thread, the representatives from the Islands have been to Westminster three times to discuss the possibility of staying within the UK. seeing how the vast majority of the oil fields would fall within their waters and by default the UK's (if they opt to remain) that puts a serious hole in the SNP's plans for public spending. a sector which will receive cuts regardless, but would face even deeper ones if the Shetlands Isles decided to remain part of the UK.
