World Divided over Bush Victory

orld leaders, politicians and political analysts have greeted news that George Bush has been re-elected as US president with mixed feelings.

Here are some of their views:

Russian President Vladimir Putin:

"I rejoice that the American people did not allow themselves to be scared and made a right decision."

Kenyan Vice President Moody Awori:

"The first term of Bush, he had come in as a lame duck. Now it appears as if he is winning very convincingly. To me I think we are going to see more dictatorship on an international scale. We are going to see more extremism come out of there. We are going to see even more isolationism where America will not bother about the United Nations. To me that is a very sad affair."

Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski:

"Terrorism has to be rejected in today's world and in this respect George Bush is a very decisive leader who is right, simply right."

French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier:

"We're going to work with the American administration. We have lots to do on current crises: Iraq, the Middle East, Iran, the challenges of the African continent, to rebuild, to renovate trans-Atlantic relations."

Former French Foreign Minister Hubert Verdine:

"There will no doubt be a sort of hangover in world opinion since almost all nations, with about three or four exceptions... wanted a change. There is a basic lack of understanding, which is lasting and deep, between the American people and the rest of the world and it goes in both directions. The world no longer understands very well what America is."

Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson:

"I don't think we will see any significant changes in his policies. He is going to continue with the policies he believes in. Relations between the United States and Europe will be patched together step-by-step. Bush has not threatened with trade obstacles, Kerry did, so in that sense it might perhaps be a bit easier."

Former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook:

"I'm not sure in the light of the last four years whether the Bush team have got the skills to heal a divided America. Not only do we have a divided America but also we have a president who is highly polarising in his approach to world politics."

Spanish political analyst Juan Carlos Rodriguez:

"Zapatero (Spanish Prime Minister) was counting on a victory for Kerry... The government will have to start making conciliatory gestures... It has been a bit naive."

Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi:

"Whoever wins will be our friend. The United States liberated us from a dictator from a very long period of war and agony. We will always be grateful to America for what it has done and continues to do."

Palestinian Envoy to Paris Leila Shahid:

"I am worried because President Bush has for four years been in charge of the American administration that has conducted a policy of war more than a policy of peace and which decided to put the peace process in a freezer for the last four years."

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom:

"In the case of President Bush and the candidate Kerry, there is no significant difference when it comes to their deep and warm support for Israel."

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri:

"We urge the new American administration (whether under Bush or Kerry) to reconsider its positions regarding the Palestinian cause and other Islamic and Arab causes. Until they reconsider their policies we will continue to regard the US administration as hostile to our Arab and Muslim causes and as a partner in the aggression against our people."

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer:

"We've had a very good relationship with them for the last four years and I'm sure we'll be able to keep building on that over the next four."

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi:

"No matter which candidate claims victory, the importance of the friendly relations between Japan and the United States and the Japan-US security alliance will not change in principle. Source

Who cares, i dont care who wins britain, i dont care who wins ireland, i dont care who wins italy or france....no offense to the rest of the world, but it's our election, thats why we're not part of the european union and are drifting ourselves away from the UN, so the "world" can control our outcomes....

Good post Lottie.

It seems that some of the former cold fish are realizing that they may need to kiss and make up with the Bush administration. If the French and Russian administrations would get behind the U.S. and coalition forces we could be out of Iraq in six months. If they had put their support in in the first place, we could have gone in, rebuilt and been out.

As for Hamas, and the radical fundamentalist, it will be terror as usual.

Yeah we've changed. The world doesn't understand us because they didn't have a 911 ! We are different now and you can thank the terrorists.

I've been anti-Bush I guess I still am, and for those who think no european should have an opinion, don't read them then wink2.gif

Anyway, now that Bush has been elected again, he has a chance to finish his work, show everyone, what was it that he tried to achieve in the first 4 years. That makes him lucky, not everyone gets another chance. How lucky it makes the americans or the world (we still live on a same globe, and that should mean something), the future will show.

Co-operation is necessary, and in it's best, everyones benefit. Working together gives better results than working against eachother. thumbsup.gif

CatAstrofix, I for one do care what people from other nations think and feel. I hope the Bush administration will do the same.

To reiterate what you stated, We all live on this planet, and had best learn to work with each other, or face massive destruction. However, I feel because we have isolated ourselves from the world, it will not happen in the next four years.

Umm... we have killed close to 14000 civilians in iraq, up until recently I believe that number was higher than the number of enemy soldiers killed.

why is it not called terrorism when carried out by those in power?

on another note, the rest of the world has endured terrorism for decades without the us intervening. And as bush showed, after the attacks in russia, he is more concerned about his ass than fighting a war on terror.

Your right babs, the world does not understand us because we had 9/11 and they can't understand why seven months after bush said bin laden was our #1 priority it was all the sudden a back burner, (Not even on the stove anymore) issue behind Iraq.

Read My LIPs There has never been any quantifying evidence that Saddam had anything to do with 9/11.

Every other nation (Except Canada) has had some sort of attack in the last fifty years. It may not have been on the level as 9/11 at one time, But more people are dying on this planet due to dictators we ignore. Wher the f... is the logic babs.

Just for the record I don't like Bush or Kerry and did not vote for either.

Ahhh... the good ol' oil argument... the only problem I have with people who remind point it out, is that they somehow ignore the fact that it goes both way - you no, the US is not the only country using oil.

I can think of number of other countries who need oil just as bad and for that reason and that reason alone were against the war whistling2.gif....

Anyway, even if true, and I don't deny the possibility that it might, this argument is as valid as any for this war.

It's nice to sit in youre warm little houses, inside youre room that is made of oil product, and infront of youre computer that is 90% petro-based.

Without oil, you and I will have nothing.

No plastics, no neylon, no computers, no electricity. Nothing.

We are peto-civilization, and as such, we will always need oil (untill we'll manage to withdraw ourselves from it and use alternative energy and industrial source).

And yes, in order for you to be able to sleep in the conditions you have today, wars will have to be waged by youre leaders, so the oil will keep comming and you can buy the next CD of youre favourite band.

Don't like the truth? happy to go back into youre bubble were you are enlighted and somewhat above this oil dependency?

Good luck.

But untill then - stop with this petronising hypocrisy.

Just so everyone knows I voted against Bush.

Ok now that I killed those that know me, I will say that the reasons were not easy. After all the evidence has been presented we had no reason to be in Iraq, Bush continued to ignore this and kept acting like he was right all along.

Also the economy here is in trouble Bush's love for outsourceing and buddies in the oil companies made me nervous.

But I'll tell you what really worries me, The high number of Voters saying moral issues were the reason they voted. We now have a republican president and congress. I runaway train in the making. And if they keep pushing the morals argument I get worried since state sponsored morality leads to tyranny....

And finally second term presidents are dangerous creatures they can do what they want and not have to worry about reelection

oh and Mr. Blair is oh so innocent correct? geez, you people don't get it...i dont go telling you that Blair should be impeached (even if you think he should), i dont go to germany saying Schroeder should be impeached, i dont go to france saying Chirac should be impeached....it's mighty arrogant of those in other countries to tell us that Bush should be impeached, even if the minority (assuming by Kerry's votes 48% of america) may think so...u have no right to tell our country what to do as we have no right to force britain or germany or france into the war...it's a decision made by each individual country, stop trying to legislate the laws of the european union over here, it's your fault u joined the union, now live with it, we're smarter in the states, we like our individual borders and our individual laws and not being put under prosecution in a world court...have fun with that....

How would you know what SC is or isn't? I think you are trying to pigeonhole him in a spot he doesn't fit in, and you are being a bit out of line as well...

I assume you are talking about the ones Saddam Hussien tortured or gassed in the streets. It was great that the US went in and put a stop to that. Now if we can finish off the terrorists in Iraq, we'll be in good shape.

I think they were referring to the other dead iraqi civilians... the ones that died since we have "liberated" iraq.

all i can say is that you have a war mongor for another 4 years... lets see what else he can destroy.. how many lives and countries... you cant fight terrorism with terrorism.. violence begets violence..

fearfulone.. your arrogance is remarkable above all abounds.. you are smarter in the states?? lol @ the alis comment where its "his fault he joined the union" that is part of the govt.... (but hey, maybe he DID join the union, you may be onto something here.....) if you learnt anything in school (apart from american socialtization) you would learn that every govt in each part of the world is different. and if you want to live in a safer world, you work together not apart and not with the venom you are showing

In light of conversations I have had with Stillcrazy, I can assure those of you that maybe in some doubt...Stillcrazy is in no way a 'leftwing Socialist'.

On the matter of world opinion and 'concerns' regarding GWB...Well, world opinion didn't bother Adolf Hitler that much and he never had the awesome firepower that the US has at its disposal.

Even so...The US Army is used to defeat.

Who cares, i dont care who wins britain, i dont care who wins ireland, i dont care who wins italy or france....

Now that's true red, white and blue!

That’s just it isn't it, Americans don't give a **** about nobody but them selves; and don’t say, “so why are we liberating the people of Iraq?” cause were not! – American G.O.P could give a rats *** about the people of Iraq. How many civilians dead? Killing these Muslim people does not liberate them, in fact, to many Christians it 's a ticket to hell because they don’t believe in J.C. as there personal savior.

It's about the globe baby – its about the globe, causes what else is there?

A letter from, Many a Red American

"O please Mr. President protect me! I sure am scared when I see those sand n***ers on T.V. Kill them for me Mr. President, for I want to live. I don't want to die a horrible death at the hands of the terrorists. Kill them all – kill them all for us Mr. President. Nuclear bunker busters – that’s ok, it goes off under ground. Here take my son, he will kill for you, he’ll kill all those wrong god people. In fact, he just said he like to be the one that drops the nuclear bunker buster on Osama. For us Mr. President, he will kill for us. My civil rights you ask? A hell, what are civil rights if you’re dead. You know, with Satan being so prevalent in the world today, I think we have to many freedoms, to many possibilities of where our people can go wrong. So take my civil liberties Mr. President, I’m too weak to have them anyway.”

God Bless America

Yours truly, wub.gif

A lot of the countries who are pro-Bush of course want to keep him in the chair, he keeps the focus on the Middle East so tight that the world can't focus on problems in these pro-Bush countries. it's like when bin laden made people think bush would be best to continue his fight against him in the tape with his statements...reverse psychology, and know the other countries are using it too.
