+susieice Posted April 2, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2014 A major earthquake just hit the coast of Chile. It has since been upgraded to an 8.2. Tsunamis were generated and are hitting the coastline now. http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/01/world/americas/chile-earthquake/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

scorpiosonic Posted April 2, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) Me too, 8.2 is a powerful one! Try usgs.gov earthquakes for 24/7 global earthquake tracking. EDIT: Cool site, w/ very good maps and search options, etc. Also, global records dating back to 1900! +susieice Posted April 2, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted April 2, 2014 CNN is blogging live. Their homepage says the earthquake caused a small landslide, but no reports yet of damage or injuries. The blog does show a fire being put out. http://cnnworldlive.cnn.com/Event/Powerful_earthquake_strikes_off_Chile?hpt=hp_c2
Lilly Posted April 2, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 2, 2014 How terrifying...I hope they can evacuate everyone before it hits.
+DieChecker Posted April 2, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) 8.2? Wow. And Californians were complaining about the 5.1 they got the other day. The Chile earthquake expended about 40,000 times more energy then the latest California one. http://en.wikipedia....magnitude_scale Edited April 2, 2014 by DieChecker
+susieice Posted April 2, 2014 Author #8 Share Posted April 2, 2014 I'm posting the CNN homepage because the breaking news link only opens the blog page I posted earlier. There's been 9 significant aftershocks, one a 6.2. On TV they said there's been waves and landslides but still no reports of damage. Hawaii is on alert in case a tsunami wave would reach them. http://www.cnn.com/
MordorOrc Posted April 2, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 2, 2014 The waves that hit were between one and two meters high, so not that bad.
regeneratia Posted April 2, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) The X.1 flare the other day. Then a major earthquake. Amid a geomagnetic storm watch, not an actual storm,... yet or if. http://www.solarham.net/index.htm My sister used to work in the Embassy in Chile. jesspy Posted April 2, 2014 #12 Share Posted April 2, 2014 Didn't the area have three hundred earthquakes in one week or something?
freetoroam Posted April 2, 2014 #13 Share Posted April 2, 2014 Am watching news, they are making no issue of it. 5 people have died, my heart goes to their families, so far casualties are very low. Everyone in low lying areas have been evacuated, so hopefully no more casualties. The news channels are basically showing all the deaths around the world because of war.........jeeze..... scorpiosonic Posted April 2, 2014 #14 Share Posted April 2, 2014 Now had 35 aftershocks in Chile....4.2 - 6.2, (not counting smaller than 2.5).
MordorOrc Posted April 3, 2014 #15 Share Posted April 3, 2014 And they've just had a new quake: 7.8 23km directly south of the city itself.
+susieice Posted April 3, 2014 Author #16 Share Posted April 3, 2014 (edited) Sounds like this one just hit within the last hour or so. http://news.yahoo.co...GlkA1NNRTM5OV8x http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/02/world/americas/chile-earthquake/index.html?hpt=hp_t3 Hope it's like the last one and doesn't do much damage.
