"GOLDen Arches?" "STARbucks?" In all seriousness: We're still ignorant about some our own world (the deep oceans, for example), so who the heck knows what might be going on on another planet? The unmanned Mars missions may raise more questions than they answer.

From the "article". Sorry, but it's nothing - and I contend there will always be nothing as Mars is a dead planet despite your best hopes and wishes.

A picture taken by the right navcam on the day before shows a similar bright speck, seen from a slightly different perspective. The only problem is that the navigation camera is a stereo system, and the left-hand navcam doesn't show the bright spots on either day.

That suggests that the "light" might be a bit of lost data that left blank spots only on the right-hand navcam pictures.

I don't think many people actually expect to find a Flying J's Truck Stop for interstellar travelers.

It would be cool, but I notice two things. The light isn't as out of focus as the surrounding ground. Additionally, there would have to be fog or vapor for the light to illuminate.

I believe what we are seeing here is a high energy particle impacting the right navcam. The same image taken at teh same time by the left navcam shows no such "spark".

All the latest raw images are available at this link http://mars.nasa.gov...multimedia/raw/

Below is a photo taken by the left navcam on SOL 589 at 10:00:03 UTC and a photo taken by the right navcam on SOL 589 at 10:00:03 UTC. You can clearly see they are the same landscape at the same time and no "spark" on the left navcam photo. An explanation http://www.darkervie...particlehit.php

Maybe ChrLzs or one of the other experts will show up and explain better than me. Sorry about the size but but I posted bigger images in the next two posts (250KB/post max)

Bigger image shrunk in Paint of right navcam on SOL 589 at 10:00:03 UTC. Also a blow-up of the "spark" in paint via a simple crop. The high energy particle obviously hit the right camera.

Latest is...the OP link was updated yesterday and no-one checked, well, me of course :tu:

Update for 9 p.m. ET April 7: Doug Ellison, an imaging guru who happens to work at JPL, quickly told me in a Twitter update that the bright spot is due to a "cosmic ray hit" affecting the rover. (Later: The Surrey Space Center's Chris Bridges agrees.)

Update for 12:50 a.m. ET April 8: Here's a recap of the four pictures we're talking about:

To see the up-dates scroll down the OP link here

No sorry I havent, I took that image from

http://www.marsanomalyresearch.com/evidence-reports/2008/140/phoenix-lander2.htm

But its found on many sites. Doesn't the legend at bottom left of pic help? It says: Phoenix lander Image 440

That's what I figured and glad they responded and put this one to bed.

Not really. I can't find the archive of images and it may not be available. That image is badly compromised, especially the close up but I agree, it does look like a high energy particle impact.

Made for a good headline though.

You'd think the vaunted UFO investigators would know that high energy particles hit CCD's all the time wouldn't you? Wouldn't that be in UFO Investigator 101? Apparently it isn't so can we all stop referring to these people as UFO investigators and start calling them UFO charlatans?
