Crew Gears Up For Spacecraft Traffic at the Station

An express cargo delivery is on its way to the International Space Station. Nearly 3 tons of food, fuel and gear to replenish Expedition 39 launched aboard an ISS Progress 55 resupply craft at 11:26 a.m. EDT from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The Russian space freighter will orbit Earth just four times before docking to the Pirs docking compartment at 5:20 p.m.

New Space Station Supply Ship Launches from Kazakhstan

The unpiloted Russian ISS Progress 55 cargo craft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan April 9 on a four-orbit, six-hour journey to deliver almost three tons of food, fuel and supplies to the six-man Expedition 39 crew aboard the International Space Station. The new Progress will remain mated to the Pirs Docking Compartment at the station until late July, when it will undock and be deorbited to burn up in the Earth's atmosphere.

New Space Station Supply Ship Arrives At The Orbital Outpost

DescriptionJust six hours after its launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan April 9, the unpiloted Russian ISS Progress 55 cargo craft arrived at the International Space Station following a same-day journey to deliver almost three tons of food, fuel and supplies to the six-man Expedition 39 crew. The new Progress linked up to the Pirs Docking Compartment at the station where it will remain until late July, when it will undock and be deorbited to burn up in the Earth's atmosphere.

Crew Begins Unloading Cargo Delivery, Continues Science

Expedition 39 crew members have begun unloading supplies delivered Wednesday aboard the ISS Progress 55 resupply craft. The crew also moved ahead with continuous international science, ongoing station maintenance and mandatory exercise.

Commander Koichi Wakata had a busy morning working throughout the station on various maintenance tasks. He moved air quality management gear then activated a ham radio. Afterward, Wakata opened a Destiny lab window shutter for an Earth observation study, assembled SpaceX Dragon gear and sampled water from the Water Recycling System. He also worked U.S. spacesuits in the Quest airlock.
