Call to review pet rabbit protection in UK

Pet rabbits need better legal protection, according to an animal welfare scientist.

James Oxley said that unlike some EU countries, the UK does not have legal requirements on the size of hutches, or that rabbits be kept in pairs.

Good call. It's not nice to be alone when you're a human either, we should be able to emphatize with other animals on this.

Too many people don't realise just how much a rabbit needs.

"A spokesperson said: "Existing legislation provides adequate protection for the welfare of domestic pets including rabbits - anyone who fails to provide for their pet's welfare needs may face prosecution."

Anyone that is except for research labs and meat producers.

It seems that how humans behave to some animals is completely arbitrary and contradictory. The sign below is from a Michael Moore film about the economically depressed area of Flint Michigan and the creative (and ethically dubious) things people will do for money.

What's wrong with eating the bunnies ? :s

Is it necessary? Does it cause harm to the rabbit.

The definition of cruelty is causing unnecessary harm.

I wouldn't answer this if this was about pet rats (because I've had those), but there's nothing inherently wrong. But the way they are treated before they end up eaten by us, should be decent and the rabbits there too should have their basic things that make a life fulfilling, met. Like having company and enough room to move properly and do their thing and even to explore too, proper living conditions. That someone's poor or hungry can't be a justification to abuse them.
