Still Waters Posted April 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Russia plans to organize a permanent base on the moon rather than leave it after several successful missions, the Russian deputy defense minister in charge of defense and space industries said. "The moon is not an intermediate point in the [space] race, it is a separate, even a self-contained goal. It would hardly be rational to make some ten or twenty flights to the moon, and then wind it all up and fly to the Mars or some asteroids. http://voiceofrussia...y-Rogozin-5452/
ancient astronaut Posted April 13, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Takes loads of $$$ and resources to pull this off, neither of which Russia has in abundance (considering the cost of Russia's latest endeavors (Crimea,Ukraine)).

Waspie_Dwarf Posted April 13, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Takes loads of $$$ and resources to pull this off, neither of which Russia has in abundance (considering the cost of Russia's latest endeavors (Crimea,Ukraine)). Don't you believe it. The Russian space programme is no longer the underfunded joke that it was after the break up of the Soviet Union. The Russians are already in the process of designing the rockets and space craft necessary to send crews to the Moon. They have usually been able to achieve most of their goals in space with a far lower budget than NASA. They have far more experience of long duration missions than the USA thanks to their Salyut and Mir space stations. They also have the added bonus that their space programme is not kicked about like a football by presidents and congress every 4 or 8 years.
Waspie_Dwarf Posted April 13, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Oh here we go again....another moon space race. Probably not. The USA is currently setting it's sights on Mars (although there is no guarantee that this will be the case once the next administration gets its hands on NASA). China is a long way from being able to join the race and is currently more interested in building a space station. Russia has also stated that a return to the Moon and manned missions to Mars should be undertaken with international cooperation. The European Space Agency, unlike NASA, is continuing to cooperate with Roscosmos on no ISS related missions. Unless the USA changes it's mind about manned missions to the Moon AND continues to refuse to cooperate with the Russians for years to come then it seems to me that it is unlikely we will see a sixties style space race being repeated.

Waspie_Dwarf Posted April 13, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 13, 2014 (edited) Lets go for it. Space race round two It's probably not going to happen, see my answer above. When the US dollar fails the Russians China and Europe will own space. Almost certainly not going to happen. NASA has a budget larger than that of Russia, China and ESA combined, NASA could suffer huge budget cuts and still be the largest space agency in the world. Besides if you are right, when the Soviet/Russian economy collapsed then the US, China and Europe should have owned space... they didn't. The Russian space programme may have gone through problems that it is only just recovering from but it more than survived. The Silver Thong Posted April 13, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 13, 2014 I have no doubt the US dollar will collapse and that sucks. However if NASA can still keep going with even less funding and with no meens of sending a person to space NASA is a last best hope. I doubt Russia or China will have much interest in funding the US ambitions of space dominance.

Space Commander Travis Posted April 13, 2014 #14 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Interesting that space industries come under the defence or defense ministry, of course there's a lot of cross-fertilisation isn't there. I wonder it if it leads to greater efficiencies everything being under one roof rather than military-oriented projects being the province of very very secret Military projects and nothing to do with NASA.

skookum Posted April 13, 2014 #20 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Russia might have funds but they lack manpower ( young people )... simple but important point. Life has been traditionally very cheap in Russia and China. I doubt they will have any problems finding people to take risks even if they lack the skills/technology to do it safely. The Russians probably already have the technology to send men to the moon, not sure on the safety of it however.

Space Commander Travis Posted April 14, 2014 #24 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Russia might have funds but they lack manpower ( young people )... simple but important point. Not sure how much manpower would be needed for project like this; surely even a long term project wouldn't be all that labour intensive. And i'm sure they wouldn't have difficulty finding volunteers for a propject like this. Life has been traditionally very cheap in Russia and China. I doubt they will have any problems finding people to take risks even if they lack the skills/technology to do it safely. Whyever do you assume they lack those? smokeycat Posted April 14, 2014 #25 Share Posted April 14, 2014 You are right so wake up and smell the coffe... See this and tell us how you think this will be resolved.. That's external debt. That's list just shows external liabilities (money that country owes other countries). It doesn't include each countries assets (money that is owed to that country). You need to show both to have a true picture ie Net International Investment Position:- http://en.wikipedia....stment_position It's a couple of years old now but the wikipedia link says:- US NIIP is $2,473.6 billion (16.9% GDP) UK NIIP is $182 billion (9.1% GDP) UK External Assets External debt seems a very big figure. But, as well as these external liabilities, we do have assets. The problem would come if there was a sharp deterioration in the value of the assets we got in exchange for the liabilities. In 2008, the UK had net external assets of £7,135.1 billion and total liabilities at £7,042.1 . (source: HSBC). Therefore our assets exceeded our liabilities by a very small amount. The level of assets and liabilities is very large given the size of the UK economy. This reflects the fact the UK economy is very open with an active financial sector and free movement of capital. UK external debt is 400% of GDP Ireland has external debt of over 1100% of GDP. The highest is Luxembourg whose external debt is 3,443% of GDP. This reflects the fact that Luxembourg is a highly attractive place for banking. It doesn’t reflect the fact Luxembourg is on the verge of collapse. Ireland on the other hand reflects the losses of their own banks.
