The birds of Shakespeare cause US trouble

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

It's William Shakespeare's 450th birthday - but in the US not everybody is celebrating his legacy.

The US is now home to an estimated 200 million European starlings. Thickset and pugnacious, starlings are the bruisers of the avian world.

And they are now such a nuisance they are one of the few bird species unprotected by law.

It is like the big snakes, there are here and there isn't much we can do to fix it. The damage is done.

I agree with GreenmansGod. They are beautiful birds, despite their terrible nature.

Starlings are really neat birds. I watch them scavenging for food in a park near Pike Place Market. The really have huge personalities. That being said they are a menace as a whole. The flocks get so big that they actually break the branches off of trees at night from the shear weight, and not little branches either. No telling how many native species the've displaced.
