docyabut2 Posted April 26, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 26, 2014 http://www.foxnews.com/science/2014/04/24/ancient-chisel-may-have-been-used-to-build-western-wall-found/ A 2,000-year-old stonemason’s chisel that may have been used in the construction of Jerusalem’s Western Wall has been unearthed at the bottom of the structure along with a number of Second Temple-era objects, claims an Israeili archaeologist. Some of the artifacts, which include a Roman sword, cooking vessels, a gold bell, coins and a ceramic seal, would suggest the Western Wall, a holy site for both Muslims and Jews, had not been built by King Herod at all.
+DieChecker Posted April 28, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Interesting..... It is amazing what they dig up. They found these almost 20 feet down the wall? Is there then archeological tunnels under that section where the tourists all congregate?
HappyMonkey Posted April 29, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 29, 2014 At a guess, wouldn't they have a designated digging space that they would work in? At a guess, wouldn't they have a designated digging space that they would work in?

There are tunnels right along the western wall that go under the Muslim Quarter (but not the Mosque) that are open for tours. I just took it and it was quite amazing. Lots of history down below the surface in Jerusalem. I'd say they've gone at least 100 feet below the current surface level there. They've found the original road that ran along the western wall 2000 years ago that you can walk along.
