World's fastest police car unveiled

It already holds the record for the quickest lap round the Top Gear track but now the Ariel Atom has become the world's fastest panda car.

Avon and Somerset police force has taken delivery of one of the 155mph cars which has been painted in the force livery and fitted with special aerodynamic blue lights.

If speed kills ... then why use something with excessive speed capabilities as a law enforcement tool to stop others from killing through speeding? Or even to pursue criminals by engaging in speeds that have a real potential of causing fatalities?

Avon & Somerset Police, aha they also have a Helicopter, but they haven't caught me yet, because I know every lay-by they sit and have their sandwiches in so I just sneak past doing 29 mph.

The car is not a full time part of the local force, the article tells you it is 'borrowed'.

It is part of a publicity to drive to cut the speeds of motorbike users in the area where there have been a recent increase in the number of deaths. This is one of the few cars in the world capable of matching the acceleration of the top end bikes out there and it's kind off like saying look we can use these if we have to catch you, but in reality it is there for publicity and to draw attention to the dangers of speeding in the area.

If this vehicle was used in a pursuit the usual pursuit guidelines would apply which should put safety before capture, but there are no plans to use it in operational duties. Its just a gimmick.

So its not a police car then.

It will have to be checked daily, it has no where for cameras or speed measuring equipment and you cant sit in the back for a wrist slapping.

Forces have done this over the years, using lotus evora's, lambo's and jag's as a deterant.
