EARTH: North Korea of this Galaxy?

Well, we humans are isolated from other parts of the galaxy and most human populations are oppressed and starving under the rule of a tiny cabal of elites.

And many of human populations think we are living on a wonderful planet. And we tend to vilify aliens. And theocracy is huge on Earth.

And...

Well, those North Koreans are isolated from outside world and most NorKs are oppressed and starving under the rule of a tiny cabal of elites.

And many of Norks think they are living in a socialist paradise, which is neither socialist nor paradise. And they tend to vilify Americans. And theocracy is huge in North Korea.

And both NorKs and Earthlings are largely ignorant of outside worlds. What a bizarre parallel, isn't it?

EDIT: If we extend the parallel even further, and the whole picture becomes truly ugly and terrifying.

I wasn't going to post because I don't have a positive thing to say about your parallel, but hey you put it out there...

If most people are oppressed and starving how come many are happy to be living on a wonderful planet/social paradise?

I think the further we extend your 'parallel' the more it falls apart.

Once the Earth is run buy a single un-elected Government and we have interstellar neighbours to contend with I will bump the thread for you. ;)

Don't take the minute detail too seriously. I am just rephrasing...um...David Icke in a rather humorous way. :)

Okay if you leave out the details, I'm in ;)

Icke might go for this though... the Americans are the shape changing lizards, invading and trying to take over North Korea paralleling their control of Earth.

Interesting idea :)

I think that people we see living in these terrible areas only think of it as paradise because it is the only thing they've known (plus they grow up being told and taught this). If you don't know the grass is greener on the other side, or even if there's grass at all, you will be content where you are.

Cool topic :)

The biggest difference is our isolation is because we lack the means to travel.

Do aliens really refer to us as 'Earthlings'?

If just IF there are aliens and they are hyper advanced, the only reason for not contacting us would be to protect us from them. We all know what happens when a advanced civilization contacts a less advanced one. The less advanced goes caput (look at history).

So its not impossible that they have created a buffer zone of no or very limited contact (at individual level maybe) uintill we are ready (standart sci-fi litterature). We have just wait for Zepham to invent the warp drive. ;-)

When Japan surrendered at the end of WW2 the part of Korea they'd annexed wasn't given freedom it was signed over to the USA. North Korea promptly invaded to get their country back, US its forces, a bit of yoyoing and then it settled down at the 38th parallel. Many North Koreas were massacred by the USA before China came to their help and they resent the country seeing it as an imperialistic power. The country is poor because the USA orchestrated sanctions on it too.

Where to start? How many countries that were part of the wartime Japanese Empire were deprived of their freedom after the defeat of Japan? You need to do a little research and pay a little attention to facts. Here is a fact, the war against Japan ended in 1945. Here is another fact, the North Korean invasion of the Republic of Korea started in 1950. Hardly a prompt invasion.

The truth is that Korea was divided into two after the war, the Soviet zone of occupation and the US zone of occupation. In 1948 an election led to the creation of the Republic of Korea. And in 1950 after various encouragements from Russia and China, North Korea invaded.

The comment about North Koreans being massacred is hardly worthy of comment. Bearing in mind that the North Koreans started the war, it could be said that they must bear the responsibility for the results.

South Korea is an advanced and wealthy country. North Korea is poverty-stricken. They are free to trade with the regional powers, China and Russia. The reason for the huge disparity between the economic performance of the two countries cannot be blamed on the US but on the incompetence and paranoia of the Northern leadership.

Presumably ALL of the civilizations in the Universe are isolated. We would not be unique in that regard. It's a big place.

You know, I have never really understood that word, 'Earthlings.' Who else would be called an 'Earthling?'

Would a dog be called an 'earthling'? or is that word only used regarding Humans... and if that is so, why not just say Humans and not use Earthlings, cause where else would Humans come from or be?

Sorry, but I had to share my wonderment!

Edited to add:

Bah, hit the post button to quick... let me add: If there were aliens that -did- refer to us as Earthlings then by them just knowing that information, wouldn't they come to the conclusion that all Humans are from Earth and so it is redundant to call them Earthlings as well? I don't have anything against the actual word, nor the concept of it ... as in 'ling' + Earth = youth from Earth; born of Earth, but what I don't get is why keep the redundancy?

In time and distance terms maybe,

Yet ET's come and go frequently in all manner of exotic machines some small some incredibly huge,

Maybe one needs to think in terms other than flat time and space?
