HMS Whimbrel: one week to save

A group of former Naval officers is fighting a last minute battle to save an historic British warship from an Egyptian scrapyard, to try to turn her into a permanent memorial to the Battle of the Atlantic.

The former HMS Whimbrel is believed to be the only surviving Royal Navy convoy escort to see action during the bitter Second World War struggle against Germany's U-boats.

It'll be a real shame if they don't get it. They have failed on the PR front though by leaving it this late....they should have been banging the drum about this for the last yr or so, donations page, fb page etc....it is a fascinating part of WW2, but you need to engage people in it and tell the stories, then you can get a head of steam and the cash will automatically follow.

I wish them well but unless a rich private investor steps in now then I think they've left it to late :-/

They should make an appeal to Camelot, the National Lottery Group. Our history should be saved in remembrance of the men who died in the Atlantic.

We've been trying to get her back to Liverpool for years. we nearly had her secured when the Egyptians wanted £250,000 for her, but then when the price was agreed just as we went to put pen to paper the price suddenly went upto 1 million.

I think they should forget about the whole idea. the ship is in a poor state the cost alone to purchase her is to much, plus we have a museum right on the water front and the maritime museum at the Albert dock, along with the Liverpool war museum still preserved - the command and control room of the Battle of the Atlantic - Western Approaches.

we should think about buying HMS Liverpool the type 42 Destroyer and HMS Illustrious (when retired). representing the Battle of the Falklands. reminding us of the role played by the type 42 and invincible class of ship during the conflict.
