Drowning at the high-water mark

With media saturation of violent attacks, shootings and assorted massacres (did you ever think there would come a day when you would read those words causally strung together?) it begs the questions;

Where is the high-water mark, how much longer can these murders be sustained before they falter and/or taper off? Or is there an unlimited amount of violence waiting to spill over into the orderly systems of life?

edit: pre-coffee grammar is much hard

I think eventually the reports will fade away and they will become common occurences much like car crashes.

You'll hear about the local ones, or the big ones, but that's it.

That is the horror of the situation, we become accustomed to the carnage and are not immediately affected so we stop caring.

I agree with the others.

I remember talking to someone a while back who was going on and on about the absolute horror that someone in his town had been shot during a robbery. He was really badly affected by it and it was a huge deal on his local news etc. I couldn't help but find it rather odd that he was so upset. We watch the Philly news here and there are multiple people getting shot and being killed every day. It would be impossible to despair over each one... you wouldn't have time.

Don't believe the hype... according to the FBI (I trust them over sensasionalist news networks with agendas to grind), violent crime is falling and approaching historic lows:

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/06/11/12170947-fbi-violent-crime-rates-in-the-us-drop-approach-historic-lows?lite

All this coverage creates a false impression and is used to justify the continued militarization of our police, despite the fact that violent crime of all kinds continues to fall:

There was a quite interesting study a few years back that showed that the more people watched crime shows the more they feel menaced by crime regardless of how much really happens.

That could be part of the current problem.

Correct - the US is safer than it has been in decades (meanwhile private gun ownership has continued to climb annually, but that's for another discussion).

You literally have parents who are terrified to send their children to school because of the fear of school shootings. In actuality, school is probably one of the safest places their kids could be - safer than the home in fact and certainly safer than in the minivan driving to school.

I read an article right after Newtown that equated these fears to the fear of plane crashes. The overwhelming fear of such a horrible act taking place in essence short circuits the brain's ability to rationalize the extremely low probability of it ever happening.

Well the odds of dying of a terrorist attack is 20 million to 1 but we still spend trillions on that.

And all those trillions are not even an insurance against some attack happening again.

Considering that having the TSA do body cavity searches to screen for colon cancer will save more lives that what they currently do to capture terrorists at about the same level of invasion of privacy.
