Mr Walker Posted July 25, 2014 #51 Share Posted July 25, 2014 Do you feel hungry without having to say to yourself I feel hungry? Did you not have thoughts before you reached the age where you learnt to talk? When someone invents something does it cease exist until a name is thought up for it? You are right that the human mind can think without language. That depends on your definition of both "think," and of " language". Human thought and language is inextricably linked and that makes us unique among animals . The human mind works and evolves develops in conjunction with an ability to think in words including simple words for an object like apple, and a complex word for an abstract concept like nationalism or love. Humans outstrip all other animals in their abilty to think somewhere (depending on the child) between 2 years of age and four. It is no coincidence that this is when language is becoming more complex, sophisticated, and important in a child's relationship with world outside itself. Music is a languge but pictures arte not However, one cannot draw pictures of meaning without language, because the images come from the mental constructs of language. If asked to draw an apple, you cannot draw it without understanding the elements of the sentence. eg draw and apple. If it did not require language to draw a physical object, then many animals would be natural artists.
