Waspie_Dwarf Posted July 25, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2014 Mars One claim they will have the first colonists on Mars by 2023. Elon Musk claims his SpaceX company will land humans on Mars by 2026. NASA claim they can have the first mission to Mars by 2035. Who is right. When will we leave the first footprints in the red soil of Mars?

skookum Posted July 25, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) Mars one claim is a pipe dream. SpaceX have the will but probably lack the knowledge for the whole mission and certainly the money. NASA have the technology and experience but don't have the money. A human landing on Mars is only going to happen when a space agency gets a blank cheque and massive political backing like the Apollo landings. Waspie_Dwarf Posted July 25, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) and certainly the money. I wouldn't bank on that. SpaceX have just laid off between two and three hundred of their staff, possibly because of money flow problems see HERE. They are promising a launch rate of 18 flights a year but have managed just 10 flights of the Falcon 9 since June 2010. I don't really know how space launches are financed, but I'm guessing that a deposit is paid and that final payment is made only after a successful launch. If that is the case then SpaceX may be facing a financial problem unless they can up their launch rate. Getting to Mars may be Elon Musk's dream but getting SpaceX truly competitive has to be his first goal.
