Why do i find the "enormous well being" funny? A small act of kindness can bring such an enormous sense of well being....we humans are funny creatures.

Strange image, that's all I can say.  Karl Marx surrounded by pigeons.  I think I saw such a picture once (not of the man but of a statue).  I feed the fish in my reservoir every morning -- you can tell by the surface of the water that they know I'm coming -- but I would not say it makes me tremendously happy.  To be sure I would never let them go hungry, but an enormous sense of well being is odd English, or is it just me.

What makes us happy!   When our body releases the chemical serotonin e.g. after eating potatoes, chocolate....etc. etc.    agree.gif?v=2

No, not just you, I think it is just right and natural to take of our fellow creatures. If anything people should be looking in the opposite direction, not at the enormous well being,...that bit should come as a natural thing to do, but at the selfish side of not giving a  damn about the our fellow  creatures on our planet - that includes humans.

ps: dear Manfred, this is not directed to you personally,, you just happen to say something which i feel was worth debating. :)

Well I see it's time for me to try to add my bit to the world's happiness -- being alive makes me happy -- its early in the morning here now and I've been up a couple hours (since daybreak) and daybreak is a wonderful time.  I spent an hour with my coffee sitting out on my deck watching the fish and the birds and the breeze in the rice fields, all by myself, but I wasn't alone -- the world was with me.

meditating

I meditate for maybe fifteen minutes daily, and listen to classical music all day in the background, but with attention maybe an hour a day.  They both contribute to happiness but neither makes me happy.  It doesn't work that way.  One thing I have learned is to not concern myself with whether I am happy or not, except if I am depressed (and we all are sometimes) there are ways to deal with it to become happier.  Keep an open mind about these ways.

Meditation is something one does less and less as one learns, and at least at first I strongly suggest reading some Buddhist or Christian books on the subject (I would include Hindu but I never found them helpful -- too much irrelevant stuff -- but I might be seriously wrong about this).  Do remember when reading them that they come from earlier cultures and therefore contain a lot of myth -- myth that is informative but not literal.

There are more important things than being happy -- many much more important things.  I even think sometimes the desire for happiness is linked to the animal desire for pleasure, and simply gets in the way.

Scratching is natural, bathing (at least the way we do it) is not and actually harmful (although not much).  I love to rub my back against the cornice of a brick wall, and do it in public.  People who see me are made happy -- you can see it in their faces.

A girl recently smiled then gave me a little wave....it felt so sweet and special....maybe it had something to do with wearing purple...from head to foot (e.g. bag and plimpsoles too!)
