a well-tended, small open fire (with a secret - underground - fresh-air supply), dully crackling away, in a big tipi, on a clear, cold night, a pile of dry wood by the door, the firelight reverberating throughout the interior, with the stars visible thru the smoke flaps. (could also qualify as "central heating") wall-to-wall buffalo hides would make me even happier, if that was at all possible...

Well yes.  My reality is central heating which feels lovely and cosy having experienced 20 years with an electric fire, (i.e. not heating the whole room adequately) but a crackling log fire would be my preference!  A visual delight, mesmerising.

(In my youth we would throw some popcorn onto a coal fire and watch it explode, for our amusement  ....   I guess you had to be there! blush.gif)

Acts of kindness as much as thankfulness.

Playfulness, too.  An incidental example:

My husband and I are both animal enthusiasts.

He upgraded our dog's bed yesterday.  Then,

when she was due to relieve herself outside

before her being let back inside overnight, she

showed her gratitude by stubbornly forcing me

to lift one side of her plush pad until she could

not help but roll off of it.

Good to read that such simple actions can be appreciated.  icon_thumleft.gif

I enjoy pruning - cutting away the withered parts to help invigorate a plant!

Little jack my 3yr old neph (aka Butterball because of his white blond hair and podgy shape) was told his was going to have carrots and peas with his dinner later.  He fell asleep and 3 hours later started to wake up whilst talking in his sleep, "Dont forget carrots in pan." (Dont forget to place the carrots in the pan)
