NOTTINGHAM, England, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Severe weather in the United Kingdom produced a moment of photographic kismet when a plane took off from East Midlands Airport ahead of a dark funnel cloud.

Surely flights would of been grounded?, even if its a small one?

In Europe tornadoes are very uncommon. I t could be that the weather guys did not even see it coming.

On average the UK gets about 30 a year.

Good thing that plane made it to Spain safely! It would have been a different matter if it hadn't. What was the pilot thinking?

Presumably depends on how far away the tornado was from the airport. The photo doesn't allow us to tell.

Tornadoes in the UK are babies compared to the massive twisters in the USA.

Yep, if they get a dozen roof shingles they hit national news.

Calm down, it was a funnel cloud, not tornado...

While the US statistically has the most tornadoes per year, actually the UK has more tornadoes per year relative to its land area than any other country - its the the intensity/strength of tornadoes here that are less.

Of course the plane made it to Spain without incident. It was flying AWAY from the funnel cloud upon take off. Just a bit of sensationalism on the writers part.

Very cool pic tho!
