How about exploiting them until exhaustion? That can certainly be turned on into a gold mine!

We can't burn all the fossil fuels we already know of without rendering ourselves extinct. And we have lots of cheaper (easier to get to) gas supplies on land. I don't think there's going to be a whole lot of development of these in the foreseeable future.
