UM-Bot Posted September 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2014 Witnesses across the country called the emergency services after seeing the object streak across the sky. Many of the reports described the spectacle as a "flaming UFO" which followed a path straight across Spain from Barcelona and Aragón in the north-east to Extremadura in the west. Sundew Posted September 9, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 9, 2014 Interesting that we have had these two incidents after the close passing of an asteroid on Sunday. Perhaps it was dragging along some distant satellites.

Perceptivum Posted September 9, 2014 #9 Share Posted September 9, 2014 Every day approximately 100 tons of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere (according to NASA). Although most of this “stuff”, pea-sized pieces of rock, doesn’t hit the ground, some estimates have approximately 37,000-78,000 tons of material falling on the Earth each year (mostly dust-sized particles). With all of that said, why is it so mysterious when one meteor, slightly bigger than average pea or dust-size, actually is seen streaking across the sky? Why would this incite panic? All of a sudden reason is thrown out and aliens are coming…

You obviously weren't following. I didn't mean anyone here. I was talking about the people whom witnessed this event and thought it was a UFO. Especially since this UFO cause panic and fear. Waspie_Dwarf Posted September 10, 2014 #17 Share Posted September 10, 2014 (edited) Interesting that we have had these two incidents after the close passing of an asteroid on Sunday. Perhaps it was dragging along some distant satellites. Yeah... I was thinking the same thing... It's just a coincidence that these two incidents occurred relatively close to a near miss by an asteroid. However the three events are still too far apart to have been related. The Nicaragua event was some 13 hours after the asteroid had passed. Given that the Earth orbits the Sun at 67,100 mph it means that any object following in the same orbit as asteroid 2014 RC, but 13 hours behind would miss the Earth by more than 870,000 miles. The Spanish meteor was seen at 06:55 local time on Sunday morning, which is 04:55 GMT. That is more than13 hours before asteroid 2014 RC passed over New Zealand, giving a similar miss distance to the Nicaragua object if it was on the same orbital path as the asteroid. These three object simply can not be related. Edited September 10, 2014 by Waspie_Dwarf

Waspie_Dwarf Posted September 10, 2014 #19 Share Posted September 10, 2014 Pathetic that thousands called the authorities about an obvious meteor instead of enjoying the short lived spectacle Let's not get too carried away by sensationalist news paper accounts. We don't know exactly what the people reported to the authorities. Most people have never seen a really bright fireball (I've spent most of my life looking upwards and I've not seen one). If you didn't know exactly what you were seeing you could easily assume you were seeing an aircraft on fire. Ringing the authorities if you think you have seen a crashing plane is far from pathetic; it is a reasonable, sensible reaction.
qxcontinuum Posted September 10, 2014 #20 Share Posted September 10, 2014 So this is exactly the meteorite that had fell in Nicaragua on the same day..... Because early hours Sunday morning in Spain was Saturday night in Nicaragua.

Peter B Posted September 10, 2014 #22 Share Posted September 10, 2014 I'd like to know how often airliner potty meteors hit the atmosphere. ?? Not often, I'd imagine, given that few airliners leave the atmosphere in the first place.
Peter B Posted September 10, 2014 #23 Share Posted September 10, 2014 So this is exactly the meteorite that had fell in Nicaragua on the same day..... Because early hours Sunday morning in Spain was Saturday night in Nicaragua. Not if Waspie Dwarf is right: The Nicaragua event was some 13 hours after the asteroid had passed. Unless it was a time-travelling meteor...
Waspie_Dwarf Posted September 10, 2014 #24 Share Posted September 10, 2014 Not if Waspie Dwarf is right: I wasn't quite right with the timing (I forgot that midnight Saturday night was actually midnight Sunday morning regarding the Nicaragua event) but my conclusion still stands; none of these events are connected. The Spanish event occurred more than an hour before the Nicaragua event (now I've learned to tell the time). If these objects were connected then they would be following the same orbit around the sun. If that were the case then only one could have hit, the other would have missed by more than 67,000 miles. Neither of these events can possibly be related to asteroid 2014 RC. Let me give you an analogy. We'll represent the Earth by a small, fast moving target. We'll represent asteroids/meteoroids by bullets and we'll represent the orbits of the asteroids/meteoroids by the bullet trajectories. Now imagine the gun that fires these bullets is fixed in position and can not be moved to track the object. As the target moves into view you start firing. It doesn't matter how many bullets you fire a maximum of one will hit the target, the rest will pass in front or behind the target. If that target gets hit by two bullets at different times then the only conclusion is that there was a second gun. To take the analogy further, if it was possible to fire two shots rapidly enough to hit the target twice then, because your gun is fixed, the bullet holes would be separated by distance along the target (as it was moving) but would be the same height above or below the centre of the target. Now if we take that analogy and reapply it to the Earth: if two impacts are related they will hit the Earth at roughly the same latitude on the planet. Asteroid 2014 RC passed 25,000 miles to the south of New Zealand. The Nicaragua impact occurred at roughly 12.1o N and the Spanish event occurred at roughly 41.4o N. So not only do the timings rule out a connection between any of these events but the geographical locations are too disparate for there to have been any connection.
