The earth has been hammered in the past by large asteroids impacting the surface causing massive destruction. 65 million years ago an asteroid smashed down into the Yucatan peninsula (Chicxulub Crater) area ending the Cretacious and wiping out 3/4s of all plant and animal life including all the non-avian dinosaurs.

Hopefully.

So you're hoping for an extinction event?

Every day approximately 100 tons of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere (according to NASA). Although most of this “stuff”, pea-sized pieces of rock, doesn’t hit the ground, some estimates have approximately 37,000-78,000 tons of material falling on the Earth each year (mostly dust-sized particles). With all of that said, why is it so mysterious when one meteor, slightly bigger than average pea or dust-size, actually is seen streaking across the sky? Why would this incite panic? All of a sudden reason is thrown out and aliens are coming…

Well then, I better set extra places at the dinner table.

Nothing new about large meteors entering earth's atmosphere. We probably miss the vast majority because they come down in the middle of the oceans so nort surewhat your point is here?

Just that a meteor strike is more than warranted if you look at our general news headlines everyday.

If Zeus is out there throwing meteors at us, I don't think Spain will be high on his list of targets.

The news has been far worse than it is today and certainly doesn't warrant wiping man off the face of the earth. Itis sad to say but there is a surprising number of people that have come to believe man has no righ to exist. I place this on the continual drone from the left about the destruction of the planet by little old mankind. It starts in elementary school and continues until the person wakes up and shakes off the silliness of the liberal doctrine of self-loathing.

I have been hearing about man made ice ages, man made global warmng, mass starvation, melting ice caps and massive superstorms since the early 70's and you know what? None of these things ever come true. They were wrong about the new ice age they had on Time and Newsweek covers in the 70's. They were wrong about manmade global warming, They were wrong about billions starving to death. They were wrong about nuclear winter. They were wrong...oh never mind. it is easier to ask what the left has been right about and that answer is nothing. Do you know we haven't had a named storm this year in the Atlantic? WTF Al Gore?

Cheer up, we aren't all that bad. The destruction of the soviet union, bemoaned by the left, was one of our greatest accomplishments and released millions from slavery. We have some religious fanatics bu that is as old as mankind. We'll destroy them as well

Your positive attitude is well taken -- things have been getting steadily better in many ways around the world. Even moral standards are much more sensible than fifty years ago.

Still, the fall of Communism in the USSR was not that much of a benefit. We now see a kleptocracy moving toward fascism.

Russia being Russia but at least it is just them, not half of Germany, all of Poland, Czechoslavakia and Hungary and a dozen other "satellite" countries the USSR milked dry. Honestly, when in its long history, has Russia not been run by some kind of thugocracy? Yes it's sad but Russia is simply reverting to form, IMHO, and taking full advantage of a very poorly led and weak USA knowing that that may all change very soon (remember Carter to Reagan? The Russians do). They'll gobble up as much as they can while the man-child resides at 1600 PA ave.and consolidate it later.

Moderator's note:

Folks, let's leave the political pontificating out of the discussion. It is not relevant. There are other sections at UM to which you can bring such discussion.
