Schools dropping Michelle Obama's lunch prog

Yeah I agree about the school, but her program is still another socialist ideal IMO. And I'm sticking to that point.

Its cool. As far as Michelle's program, I can agree to disagree. Were both free to see things from our own POV. :tu:

In my home, I made the decisions about what my kids ate, not them. I see nothing wrong with adults making dietary choices for children who have neither the information, education, or understanding of dietary needs & nutrition. It's taxpayer money that's buying the food, and I would prefer to see the money spent on good nutrition and not junk food. If my kids didn't like what was served they had choices: go to bed hungry or eat what was put on the table. We hear all this stuff about kids being overweight and the problems with poor nutrition, yet we're OK with school lunches that have low nutritional value? How is that caring about the kids?

I never understood the mentality of not eating or throwing away food when one is hungry just because you don't like it. I have never not eaten when food was put in front of me. As a kid if I didn't like something I ate it anyway, even though I could have easily had my mother make something different. The kids throwing away the food are nothing more then spoiled little brats who have no idea what real hunger is. And to the people who are saying the healthy food is bland and doesn't taste good, you could have a master chef come in and personally cook these kids their lunch and half of the spoiled little brats would still throw it away.

For the record, I never said healthy food was bland and doesn't taste good. I said boiled or steamed, with no seasoning whatsoever, is bland and doesn't taste good. Even a little olive oil and lemon pepper makes cauliflower palatable and I don't like it.

Very well said and agree 100%. :tu:

but in school it is no longer your decision, in some schools, it has nothing to do with kids choice of food, or how healthy the food is. it is about you not having a say or control what school puts in your kid. well at least their attempt, since you would still be able to with doctors note, so the schools has to see a doctors note in order for you to make a desision what your kid eats at school.

I was not talking about all healthy food just the food that you said was "boiled or steamed, with no seasoning whatsoever". And like I said even if there was seasonings added or the food was 5 star restaurant quality the kids will still throw it away. I mean it, I've seen kids turn down gourmet food for bland chicken tenders, and that's the real point. Kids will pick bland food over good seasoned food because they have never had anything else. It still blows my mind.

Have a banana, it's healthy...and...it will make you feel better...bananadance01_zpsa8d75f96.gif

Bananas are basically just sugar and starch. While not bad for you they are not quite as healthy as some people believe.

Now here's the question: if we, as educated adults, don't know whats good or bad for us how do expect our kids to make the right choice in their foods?

Those are the two reasons I cannot eat them. In fact, I don't do well with most fruit. :)

Lets face it, I hear people say things about some food or food group that just completely false all the time. Take this gluten free fad that's going around now. I can't tell you how many times I have heard or seen "It's gluten free, it's healthier for you" when in reality gluten free foods are normally loaded with more sugar and other additives to make it taste better making it not healthy for people (this is a pet peeve of mine).

Now here's the question for everyone: if we, as educated adults, don't know whats good or bad for us how do expect our kids to make the right choice in their foods?

This isn't about what kind of food is good for you or bad for you. This is about government intruding into another area where people should be free to choose.

Except that it isn't because there is no federal or state law forcing people to eat school cafeteria food.

Michelle is not only taking choice away from the kids but is trying to do the job of every school dietician in the country.

Just like every other special interest group in the country. At least she isn't in it out of self-interest.

This overrides differences in regional cuisine. It's funny, but the same people that always cry about "diversity" seem determined to eliminate it in any area where they think they know better. Eating is one of the more personal things we do. Everyone likes something different, a little sweeter here, a little spicier there. Even the Three Bears liked their porridge cooked differently. We used to sneer at the Soviets for their attempts at central control but now we're doing the same thing. Their system failed. Ours is failing, the kids themselves are throwing away tons of mandated food. Is healthy food in the trash better for them than a pizza they actually eat?

No, healthy food is better for them in their tummies, instead of the pizza they eat.

And guess what! Skipping lunch and going hungry for a few hours is better for them than eating the pizza.

that is the lamest argument ever.

there is no laws that forbid kids from biting a poptart in a shape of a gun, but school punishes for it, there is no law that forbids kids to write an essay that thyey killed dinosor with a gun, yet kids are punished. there is no law that forbids a reference to a santa on x mass, but some schools have no problem baning it and enforcing, school policy is the only law that you need to know when in school.

The main problem I see here is that there doesn't seem to be much imagination with this program. There are all kinds of great ways to sneak fruits and veggies into foods that everyone knows kids love. I cook chopped cauliflower, mushrooms and carrots in spaghetti sauce for my husband and I. They can even be pureed so the veggies couldn't be picked out. The kids would get the nutrition they need and there wouldn't be this major backlash.

I have to respectfully disagree with that. Babies have to eat every 3 hours and children are constantly growing and need all the nourishment they can get. When they skip meals, they are are not any better off than before but will be hungrier and thus eat more in their next meal to make up for it if they can get away with it. They have all their life later to fast and worry about weight but while they are growing, every kid should be given the necessary nutrients to avoid deficiencies and disorders.

I remember growing up and our cafeteria served pizza, Salsbury steak, meatloaf, green beans, corn, milk and a cake or brownie, all of which we burned off in the playground and recess, there were hardly any overweight kids and maybe one or two obese at that time that I can remember. I do remember we had cafeteria ladies that would be like moms to us saying to eat all the food, don't waste any. Taking away Phys Ed and giving them laptops is proving to be more detrimental to the health of kids as there needs to be a healthy balance of exercising the mind and body...

This is all about more control over our everyday lives, not about fat kids that the tranny (allegedly) cares about. Until the sheep come to that realization, this kind of garbage will continue.

Even Medical News Today isn't a fan of the new lunch program. They've had several articles on it. Good intentions have to come with a little common sense.

When trying to force schools to offer a healthier cafeteria menu is viewed as tyranny, while saying its OK for our children to eat junk food, its time to unfollow this thread. The lack of logic and abundance of stupidity reminds me of how life is too short to waste any more time in this thread. Have fun everyone.:)

yea you really should unfollow. if you can not see that it is not about food itself, but another aspect of our lives that they want to control. as far as healthy goes. lmao.

Some people are so indoctrinated, they'll never see anything other than what they're told by their messiahs.

And some people are so far gone into their ideology that they can't even have a mature, logical conversation without converting to wild conspiracy theories.

If you honestly think that trying to get kids to eat better is about control then you need to put down the kool-aid, take a step back and try to look at this whole thing in a different way. Here's some help: try to imagine that its not an Obama trying to get kids to eat better and instead its some libertarian. You guys would probably love it.

does not matter who it is, the fact is they do not allow parents to pack kids launch. that is happening, it is not a conspiracy. may be you shopuld stay off koolaid,

lmao and what makes you think they are eating better than before? did all kids bring junk food? if you knew even a little what goes into proccessed food, (and that is exactly what kids get), do schools even wash fruits from wax and chemicals they were sprayed???? do you know that water alone does not remove it.

and what makes any administration think they know better than every parent???

idk about you but i'm not ok with of gvmnt, whoeverver is in charge, TRYING TO DO this or that. i can't see many examples when their tries acheve anything good.

There's a big difference between "trying to get kids to eat better" and "making kids eat what you think is better".

There's a big difference between "trying to get kids to eat better" and "making kids eat what you think is better".

My husband hates calves liver. When he was a child his dad made him eat it, because he liked it they had it at least once a month...and it's good for you. His dad would make him sit at the table until he finished every bite, which usually took about two hours. Every time, shortly after getting up from the table, my husband would end up getting sick and throwing every bit of it up. This happened at least six times before my husband's mother put her foot down and said that was enough. To this day, he won't hardly even look at liver.

This is what I always think of when people say the kids will eat what's put in front of them or they will go without. Having a choice, it's like adults forget there are things they really don't like and wouldn't eat.

My wife sometimes will offer the kids something, like beef stroganoff, and both will say, "I don't want to eat this", and she will tell them, "Well I guess you are not hungry then.". Then one time, when we had only hot dogs or something to eat, my wife said,"I don't want to eat this.", and so I said, "I guess you are not hungry then.". She didn't think it was funny, but I and the kids did.

My palate has become much more educated as I have aged.

When I was a kid, there was somethings I just would not even try...now there are very few things I won't eat...usually because it doesn't agree with me.

I imagine a lot of kids are this way...you cannot "make them" eat something they equate to eating poo...just not going to happen...don't care how healthy it is and don't care how strong your enforcing arm becomes...some will just go hungry and that makes the entire plan totally fail ...does it not?

Healthy "options" should be the key here...not healthy demands.

I know, just as Aztek pointed out above...there are no laws against a lot of things the schools ban anyway...but last time I checked, this wasn't the Communist states of America yet...(though we seem to be trying really hard to get there)....The liberal catch line needs to go..."it takes a village to raise a child"...bullsh!t...it takes their parents...not the damn state...
