Schools dropping Michelle Obama's lunch prog

I know what you mean. Brown bagging is what we called bringing your own lunch and I agree with the garbage the cafeteria served. Isn't it possible that maybe, just maybe, the garbage serving cafeteria is what Michelle was trying to change? Is it really wrong to try and get schools to offer healthier foods? If the kids want garbage do they not have the option of bringing garbage from home to eat?

No, but she went about it the wrong way. You can't force any kind of socialism in this country, right wing or left wing. People won't tolerate it before too long. This nation is a capitalist society and money talks and all else walks. Money is what we understand the most. Because losing too much money is a great communication to us.

So if the government wants to slow down people from indulging themselves in consuming harmful products that cost skyrocketing healthcare, then they should just do what they did with tobacco...tax the hell out of the product to pay for the healthcare cost. Which they will eventually. Well I think they already have with soda in the stores.

But never ever force people with socialist ideals. That really p***es people off and makes them feel trapped and caged.

Trying to get kids to eat healthy and keep corporations like Chick-fil-a and papa johns out of school cafeteria's is being a tyrant? Now that's laughable! :innocent:

Even tyrants can have good intentions, or appear to. Mandating it nationwide with threats of penalties for non compliance is what makes this a tyrannical act. Other First Ladies have had their pet projects, from drugs to litter to reading, but this is the first one I'm aware of that included an "or else". Michelle is not encouraging kids to eat better, she's ordering them to and removing all other choices. That's the difference.

All she did was force the schools to sell healthier snacks and lunches. The kids eat breakfast at home, lunch at school and dinner at home so were talking one meal per day at school. The kids are able to bring lunch from home so nobody is being forced to do anything, just presented with healthier options at school if they choose to purchase lunch there.

Since you bring up money. Wouldn't it be smarter for kids to bring food from home since food can be bought in the store cheaper than out of a vending machine at school or even the cafeteria?

Again, the kids and their parents have options. Maybe parents need to get off their dead asses and stop relying on the schools so much. How difficult is it to show a child how to pack a lunch so they have the energy to last through the school day? Nobody is being forced to do anything, period. Don't like the school menu, brown bag it! Simple as that.

Is she forcing them? No. The kids can bring lunches from home where they are free to pack whatever they like so Michelle isn't forcing anyone to do anything. This is misdirection to keep the blame off the ones that really are at fault and that's the parents, not the politicians or the school but the parents.

Force? What a joke. Show me a school where the child doesn't have an option to pack the lunch. My children were the most picky eaters ever, and would hardly eat anything my wife made. Then they started going to school a 2 years ago. From trying different healthy things in the school lunches, they are now willing to try most anything put in front of them. What kind of idiots cry about a school serving healthy food? That has got to be possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Not surprising coming from some on here though...

Well I was going to agree with you about the 'brown bagging' ideal to solve the current O-bummer law, since I mentioned it before. But looks like Aztek blew that problem solver out of the water. Damn! I didn't even think they'd go that far.

Hey look man, I'm into eating healthy too, much like you. That's why I liked your first post. I try not to consume junk food. Hell, I even quit smoking about 4 years ago after 22 years of smoking. But I don't go around trying to have everybody else do the same as me. It's not my business what they eat or drink. Or what I think everybody else should. I take care of myself and everybody else is not my concern. That's interfering with their lives if I was to dictate to people like Michelle O-bummer and tell them what they should be eating/drinking and not eating/drinking at the schools. Bottom line, it's socialism.

Capisce?

Whoops! Betcha' didn't see that coming, huh?

DieChecker got me like that one time, much like Aztek just did with you. Hey man, when you're wrong...well you're wrong, what can you do? Lol.

Your ass notwithstanding, there remains the simple fact that there is no federal or state guideline anywhere that will support any regulation a school might issue not allowing students to bring their own lunch.

Which is not to say that schools won't try. Some do it due to liability; parents might have the heart in the right place, but packing a mayo and bologna sandwich for a field trip that will involve the sandwich spending 5 hours in a hot bus baggage compartment will still result in a child with the runs. Some do it out of a genuine desire to curb the obesity epidemic; even the the article (Yeah. All five links are pretty much the same article) relates the stories of parents that consider three bags of chips to be lunch. Some do it for financial purposes; you get extra bennies from the state if you have a nutritional option, and there are few schools that can afford to turn away money, particularly public schools.

But no, ultimately, the government does not get involved in what people eat and drink unless there is some significant and proven danger to the health and safety of the citizens as a whole. People are expected to police themselves and their children.

What Aztec posted was decisions made by the schools and had nothing to do with Michelle's program. That was all about the school trying to gain more revenue by banning brown bagged lunches so the kids had no choice but to eat the schools food. That is socialism by the schools.

Those schools were trying to force kids to eat ****ty food to make a profit while Michelle's program was trying to put healthier food on the schools menu. Now you tell me, which is worse?

I'm not sure what the big deal is...

Back many-many years ago, our school cafeteria actually had food that was palatable...Roast beef, mashed potatoes and green beans for instance. It wasn't 5 star cuisine, but for a little hick country school, it was pretty good.

We also had what was called "the quick lunch line" that served hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries...they were OK, more healthy than a mcDonalds burger, but still...a burger or dog...

I didn't end up obese and neither did many of my classmates...

Wasted food is wasted...if no one is eating it, continuing to prepare it is what I would call insanity.

Perhaps we need to be looking a little deeper than just what goes into the body as to what is causing the problems...like maybe what the body does "after" it gets a belly full. Pretty sure almost all the kids these days slam down chow and then sit on their backsides in front of the TV or a computer now...we used to not do that.

In all honesty, i have suspected for a long time that the major culprit was the American focus on the "individual".

For all that people slam Japan for being a "hive" mind, and various other scornful comments at the outright resistance to individuality as a primary defining trait (not a non-existent trait, but simply not a primary one), I have found the focus in a socially-oriented such as this one actively encourages children to participate in group activities, which tend to involved being outdoors, walking from one place to another, engaging in sports, or at the very least, doing something other than plopping oneself on the couch and growing roots.

There isn't an "alpha male" culture here like in the U.S., which means that you don't have schools spending a ridiculous percentage of their budget on the football to heap accolades on a handful of students while everyone else cheers and eats nachos on the bleachers. All the students exercise regularly, actual physical exercise which tends to carry on to adulthood. Most play sports as well, although, much like in America, sports tend to be left by the wayside once the student leaves high school.

Schools and parents are not opposite sides of the team. If a school cafeteria is wanting, it doesn't mean the parents win. It means the parents, the school, and the children, have lost. In the U.S., parents are more concerned that someone has said "no" to them, than that their precious little tubbykins is sweating Mountain Dew. They are less concerned with solving the problem of obesity, unhealthy lifestyle, and bad cafeteria lunches than they are with making sure that they are each individually not being accused of being bad parents.

Yeah I agree about the school, but her program is still another socialist ideal IMO. And I'm sticking to that point.

You people are the type of parents that will feed your children bull**** every night just because you don't want to hear them cry about it. Processed food, McDonalds, sodium filled fried delight...just so you don't have to hear them whine about eating their broccoli. You people disgust me, seriously.

QUOTE-

a study by

Cornell and Bringham Young

universities estimates the waste at $

4 million per day. Students in Los

Angeles schools alone are throwing

away $100,000 in food per day.

.

could they not give this food to the homeless? or the needy?

i deplore waste, ESPECIALLY food, when there are so many hungry people in the world.

and we call ourselves a 'civilised society'.

O hey that reminds me. You know what's really good with broccoli? Melted artery clogging Velveeta cheese on top. Mmm - mmm, sure does make it taste a whole lot better.

Over-dramatic? If you are upset that your kids can't eat chicken nuggets and french fries for lunch, what do you feed them for dinner? Think about it. If you are mad that your kids can't eat bull**** at lunchtime, are you feeding them bull**** at dinner? Probably so. When I was little, I couldn't leave the table until I ate my vegetables. I am a healthy man because of times like that.

This isn't about what kind of food is good for you or bad for you. This is about government intruding into another area where people should be free to choose. Michelle is not only taking choice away from the kids but is trying to do the job of every school dietician in the country. This overrides differences in regional cuisine. It's funny, but the same people that always cry about "diversity" seem determined to eliminate it in any area where they think they know better. Eating is one of the more personal things we do. Everyone likes something different, a little sweeter here, a little spicier there. Even the Three Bears liked their porridge cooked differently. We used to sneer at the Soviets for their attempts at central control but now we're doing the same thing. Their system failed. Ours is failing, the kids themselves are throwing away tons of mandated food. Is healthy food in the trash better for them than a pizza they actually eat?

I never understood the mentality of not eating or throwing away food when one is hungry just because you don't like it. I have never not eaten when food was put in front of me. As a kid if I didn't like something I ate it anyway, even though I could have easily had my mother make something different. The kids throwing away the food are nothing more then spoiled little brats who have no idea what real hunger is. And to the people who are saying the healthy food is bland and doesn't taste good, you could have a master chef come in and personally cook these kids their lunch and half of the spoiled little brats would still throw it away.
