Still Waters Posted December 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 5, 2014 A woman in the San Luis Valley was surprised when she gave birth to a baby girl this week that weighed 13 pound 13 ounces. Mia Yasmin Garcia was born by C-section on Monday. She was 22 inches long. Her father, Francisco Garcia, says her size shocked everyone including staff at San Luis Valley Hospital. http://www.9news.com...-baby/19871201/

Lilly Posted December 5, 2014 #3 Share Posted December 5, 2014 Sounds like the Mom may have had gestational diabetes (that will produce huge chubby babies).
Karasu Posted December 5, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 5, 2014 Have you ever seen 'The Kingdom' (the original Lars von Triel version)? There's a woman who gets impregnated by a ghost, and then births an abnormally large baby; that then ages rapidly.
Stubbly_Dooright Posted December 5, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 5, 2014 (edited) Sounds like the Mom may have had gestational diabetes (that will produce huge chubby babies). Yeah, chances are. I had gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies. I had to be on diets during both my pregnancies. My levels were high with my first, so my diet was strict. I guess it paid off, my daughter was eight pounds six ounces. Now, I had again with my second pregnancy, but my levels were borderline, and I was told not to go crazy with the total elimination of sugars and the like. It was a different doctor and in a different state. Anyways, my son was nine pounds sixteen ounces. I remember the nurse weighing him was shocked when she was telling us how much he weighed. So, I wonder, if I should have gone crazy with the sugar elimination diet. Then again, my daughter was four days early and my son was weeks late. So who knows.I know one thing, I had my son vaginally. I am reading in the article that the thirteen pounder was delivered by C section. I would really be impressed if she had her vaginally as well. Edit: You know I am beginning to remember that my daughter was actually six pounds and eight ounces. Well, it was twenty two years ago! +DieChecker Posted December 6, 2014 #7 Share Posted December 6, 2014 My wife says she saw this on some other sites and it was due to the mother having diabetes. They suspected an 11 or 12 pound baby, but the little girl was bigger then expectations.
Lilly Posted December 6, 2014 #8 Share Posted December 6, 2014 My son was 10 and a half pounds and during my pregnancy I was tested for gestational diabetes 3 times. I didn't have it, just had a very large boy. He was big but not nearly as chubby as this little one. I had a C-section as well...I can't imagine pushing out a baby as large as my son let alone one 13 lbs 13 oz! *shudder*

They suspected an 11 or 12 pound baby, but the little girl was bigger then expectations. I wonder if her ob/gyn caught that and tried to control it with a diet. Sounds like that didn't happen. Although, I did have gestational diabetes with him as well as my daughter.
highdesert50 Posted December 6, 2014 #10 Share Posted December 6, 2014 When one considers that maternal mortality was estimated to be upwards to twenty percent in prehistoric societies and even now about 1:140 in developing countries, the maternal drive and courage of women, the risk takers, to procreate is admirable. Luca-RoseElsie-Raemom1921 Posted December 7, 2014 #17 Share Posted December 7, 2014 Apparently my nanna (mom's mom) was 13 pounds at birth. As far as I know my grand grandmother didn't have diabetes. Nanna so far has been the biggest baby we know of anyone in our family having. Biggest has been 7lb and 4 oz

Moon Gazer Posted December 9, 2014 #19 Share Posted December 9, 2014 Blimey that's a big baby!! My two boys were a fair size. My first was 4 days over and was 8lb 15oz and my second was a whole TWO WEEKS late and was 10lb 8oz!! I'm currently pregnant again (surrogate for my sister who cannot have her own children) so it will be interesting to see how big / small this one is when it arrives
