GREENPEACE said its executive director will travel to Peru to personally apologise for the environmental group’s stunt at the world-famous Nazca lines, which Peruvian authorities say harmed the archaeological marvel.

The group said it was willing to accept the consequences. A senior Peruvian official said his government would seek criminal charges against Greenpeace activists who allegedly damaged the lines by leaving footprints in the adjacent desert.

“We fully understand that this looks bad,” Greenpeace said. “We came across as careless and crass.”

Disgraceful. This is exactly what frustrates me about some environmental groups - they have no holistic understanding of the world around them. The environment's important, but other things are as well.

Fanatics are always dangerous. To the point that they end up turning to being vandals.

Ah, that organizations... Just made to provide money for its workers. So many years of 'fighting' for nature that i am not sure how is it possible that the Earth is getting destroyed massively, do that people do anything except taking in donations?

'the future is renewable' - while walking around on treasured ancient ground carelessly. Did they bring those stones or did they change the scene..

I find it odd that Greenpeace chose this time and place for the 'renewable - message' - bc its something treasured not destroyed.

Isn't Greenpeace in like 'bam, stop disturbing' (?) Now they walk 'carefully' and disturb with their actions protected piece of nature and history(?)

So now they rather disturb than pointing to mistakes?? They could have pointed to the situation Dalai Lama, Vatican, China - renewable future. They could have pointed to the polar bear being kept in Argentina, in 'solitary confinement' - renewable future.

I find it very strange. Also the quick or even apology and offer to face punishment. Which seems normal but is it 'Greenpeace-normal'?

I don't know...

Disappointing on so many levels...

I personally think that we need more change from the bottom up - from people and forces of the free market. More money on scientific research to truly help solve environmental problems.

From what I read there wasn't any permanent defacing. It's just material weighed down. So how is this "damaging" the geoglyphs?

Footprints over unexcavated archeological areas, just for one. A complete no-no that can land you in jail in many countries.

They walked in single file, and the area has a crust of dark sand over white sand, which is not possible to repair. The new "white line" they've created will take centuries, if ever, to recover. Quite possibly what they did may make the Hummingbird wind erode away in a couple decades.

Idiots.

All the areas marked in red are the new lines the Greenpeace people made...

This could/should of been done with Photoshop with only just a couple of minutes of time.

That area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Greenpeace had no business being there without specific, controlled permission from the Peruvian government.

Green Peace is a public relations organization promoting socialism any way they can. Communism has gone from red to green! That means they are on the GO! They use environmental issues as an excuse to take the land from the people and do away with the Constitutional right of land ownership.

I want to comment on the Nazca geoglyphs. Von Daniken and others show these giant glyphs but there is one they pass over without comment. The ancient cultures in South America have figurines, images on pottery and cloth of dinosaurs! The lines depict animals, some mazes, and some appear to resemble crop circles. However, ancient astronaut propagandists do not mention that one of the giant glyphs is of a juvenile T-rex! See the photo.

Just typical of the looney fringe, the Peruvians are justified to be upset about this. They could have defaced it for a long time to come.

Ohh the horror. How terrifying it must be to ONLY take from the collective what you need, while giving to the collective what you can.

I'm glad you pointed that out, here I was thinking that Greenpeace was bunch of radical nutters who think we shouldn't live beyond our means and in balance with the environment NOW I discover they're COMMIES as well!

What has socialism anything to do with this?

What has socialism anything to do with this?

Because quite a few Americans are deathly afraid of Communism.

Look at the whole panic over "Socialised Medicine".
