Scientists now believe that Neanderthals were no less advanced that their modern human counterparts.

An increasing body of evidence suggests that our Neanderthal cousins were surprisingly similar to the ancestors of modern man.

Neanderthals have alway gotten a bad rap. Their radical morphological deviation from the European norm automatically made them our inferiors in the minds of nineteenth century paleontologists.

QUOTE-

Some of the earliest depictions of Neanderthals

suggested that they were slow, dim-witted

cavemen, but thanks to a slew of palaeontological

discoveries over the years we now know that

these close relatives to modern humans were both

intelligent and skillful; creating their own tools

and living in complex social groups.

.

surely, no-one these days really believes Neanderthals were a bunch of window-licking retards?!

as Hammerclaw pointed out, this isn't the nineteenth century anymore.....

I can only think that it was the way that the neural connections within the brain were organised that gave Homo Sapien Sapiens the edge. OR - maybe HSS simply reproduced with greater frequency... :unsure2:

.

as a wise man(?) once said- "size matters not"

maybe it was numbers that gave us the edge? after all, the puny little Lilliputians gave Gulliver a hard time.....

They were genetically swamped.

I could see a case for increased reproduction in HSS. A larger population means more warriors to kill off the Neanderthal.

They were not as handsome and beautiful as HSS ~ without beauty our specie would not have survived this far ~ botoxians will end up ruling the future ~

It's just another part of European descendants taking control of everything and exploiting the environment and its surroundings to depletion. Modern European man has been a virus to this planet it seems.

On the bright side, they left us three percent of their genome, fair skin, red hair and bagpipes.

I have long suggested that big-brained Neanderthal tribes were the equivalent intellectually of small liberal-arts college faculties - too busy trying to find the correct pronunciation of "Om" and forming amateur chamber music societies to survive in the long run. But I only do it to annoy. :D

I have read some academic papers suggesting that, while Neanderthals were as intelligent as H. sap, they weren't as creatively intelligent. For example, they didn't appear to have ever developed sewing as a means to make warmer clothing - despite living in a much colder climate than where modern humans developed.

I guess that's quite possible as IQ indicates your ability to learn and think, not what you actually know how to do. Even two different people with the same general IQ don't easily learn how to do the same tasks or learn the same information. Somethings I thing are quite simple, other people find hard to grasp. The brain "wiring" has to account for something.

Of course that's what I'm referring too since they came from Europe.

Being as smart as us really isn't that much of an accomplishment. Certainly not worth bragging about.

Could you two go somewhere and self-flagellate in private?

Funny that people think of our ancestors as these slow, dumb, simple beast like creatures... when they were obviously savvy, adaptive and highly intelligent... proved in the fact that we are here.

Them liveing for millions of years does not make them dumb.
