Wow. So much emotive propaganda in this thread, so little critical thought.

what? do i care? no, ISIS must be wiped out and there's nothing you can do about it

I think the argument is about emotiveness is a fair one in that arguments like "they're just evil, wipe them all out" and "HATE THEM HATE THEM HATE THEM HATE THEM" are all just, well, a short-term solution, it doesn't consider why they arose in the first place and how to stop other similar organisations arising, if ISIS were ever wiped out. Short term emotional responses are, well, short-term solutions, they won't solve the question of how to prevent this sort of thing happening.

we should have boots on the ground for real, surround them, exterminate them

Are we still talking about Savile in Yorkshire..? Or a land far far away..?

Yes I'm being facetious and sorry about that but I'm making a serious point as well (without spelling it out)

Would that stop them? Who would it stop? When should we stop? When they're all exterminated? When who are all exterminated? All the terrorists? Just all of those who call themselves (currently) ISIS? If ISIS was exterminated, you don't think they'd just spring up again under some other name and some other Flag of Evil? Perhaps we ought to think about stopping it happening in the first place - get to the roots of where they get support from, and what the circumstances are that allow them to take root?

We need to keep in mind that the Extreme Islamics Fundamentalists have never been able to get along well with anyone else. It's just that recently these extreme groups have grown in response the political and social unrest in the ME.

Which was caused by whom? The West and it's regional allies purposeldy prolonged a civil war by provinding arms and funds to rebel groups in Syria. But now Assad has won the war, the rebels have collapsed to extremism and infighting. If anything, it's time to work with the Syrian regime and clean up the mess.

The Western Nations had put in a great amount of money/time/effort and simply desired to do business...but screwed up by supporting anyone seen as offering stability

The US is not learning from it's mistakes, last time I checked Obama was planning to train 15,000 ''moderate'' rebels to fight ISIS in Syria. And then what? How is this offering stability? There is a legitimate governement in Damascus with it's own army which controls 70-80% of the territory so why the need of training ''rebels''? What the Syrian people have to say about this? Some Western Nations no longer wants anything to do with Syria though. That's good sign.

Long before Western Nations were involved Islamic Extremists were wrecking havoc...even back to Roman times.

And now ISIS has seen fit to burn the captured Jordanian pilot alive. When do we assign the blame where it belongs?

The big three monotheist religions each have their own bloodshed(s) at some point in history. Some of them based on extremism, or a blend of theology and fanatism. Cruisades, Inquisition?

When do we assign the blame where it belongs?

Going back to modern times, how should these sickos manage to have power and the means to wreak havoc in the first place? Yes, it's very clear who helped create fertile grounds for such ultrafundamentalist murderers. Let's not hide our heads in the sand and pretend that we did not distabilized the region by prolonging the civil war in Syria.

islamic extremists were wreaking havoc in Roman times? This is a new one on me. The Prophet Mohammed lived in the 7th century AD/CE/whatever the currently PC term is for it, and the Roman empire had ceased to be by the end of the 5th century. :unsure2:

There was the expansionism that led to the creation of an Islamic empire in Spain and as far as the borders of France, to be sure, but how does that differ from the expansion of any empire there's ever been, whatever religious flag they sailed under? Certainly they were at the very least equaled, if not far excelled, in brutality and fanaticism by the Crusaders and any number of "Christian" empires; for an example of "Christian" fanaticism, surely, you need look no further than our friends in the Inquisition, and the religious wars all across Europe for centuries. And is there really no correlation at all between the fact that modern day Islamic fundamentalism only really began to stir after the West had made it its policy to poke its nose into the affairs of any number of countries in the Middle East in furtherance of its own ambitions, and impose its puppet leaders in this, that and the other country, and often support "Freedom Fighters" who were often at the absolute cutting edge of fanaticism, just as long as the people these brave warriors were fighting were also the enemies of Uncle Sam?

Only the western roman empire fell in the 5th century. The Eastern Roman Empire, better known now as the Byzantine Empire, lasted till the fall on Constantinople in 1453 to the Ottoman Turks. For awhile after the western roman empire fell the eastern roman empire was one of the wealthiest and most powerful countries of its time.
