witchcraft of athens, texas

I've heard many rumors about the small town of Athens, Texas. i am go to college there and most of the other students and teachers have been talking about the secrets about this town. There have been reports of witchcraft all over the county, but in Athens they say that there are underground tunnels that are in the shape of a pentagram. There is also a park that many ritualistic sacrifices have taken place. I would think this was ridicules, but our instructor who is a preachers wife and a very respectable woman agrees with all these rumors. Also, one of my close friends has said that there has never been a tornado to ever have touched down in the town because of the spells cast on the town. i am rather curious if anyone else has ever heard anything about this strange town and it's many secrets.

Laughs just because they are respectable and intelligent doesn't mean they can't conform to others beliefs and opinions by groupthink. For example Kennedy was thought to be highly charsmatic and could do no wrong, well look at the Bay of Pigs and how groupthink worked out there. Being a well known member of a community, having high IQ, common sense..doesn't make something you say automatically true..this applies even with experts, so it's good to always question. Plus, I am too dam curious in my own nature.

Anywho, would be interesting to find out none the less, lol oo tunnels teheh..always fun XD

I'm originally from Dallas, TX and have never heard of such things about Athens, TX. However, back in 1983, my family moved to Lubbock, TX and then I did hear stories similar to what you are saying about a town in West Texas called New Home. Kids always try to break into that community and get run off. My brother and several others went there and they unleashed dogs on them. I've had other friends say they have been intimidated out of town by being followed. Apparently there are three main roads into the town and all are 6 miles in length. I never went there personally, but I used to date a girl in Brownfield who confirmed a lot of the rumors.

I live in Athens,TX and I have lived here for quite awhile and Yes i have heard all about this and even witnesses a few myself.  I have been to the place you talk about where rituals take place... it is called Fullers Park .. it use to belong to a preacher of a baptist church in the center of Athens ... he has been dead along time and no one ever bought the land... him and his wife was also buried there and there graves stones still stand with heavy log chains going around them on posts making like a fence. there is also an old well and a house on the property and some old monkey cages which are the main spot for creepy things... I have drop past late at night and see lights out there.... like candles or flashlights ... i never been inside at night but i have visited during the day many times... one such visit me and my friends found chicken heads and such.... was freaky.. There is a story about the monkey cages... many versions but all of them mainly sum up to the fact that the preacher owned monkeys and would take aggression out on them... beat them... some even say he molested them and did rituals but that is not for sure... they say that the monkeys went crazy one time when he went out there and go loose... it is even said they killed the preacher but i don't know that for sure... but there is a road called meredith that is nick named monkey road because supposedly when the monkeys got loose they ended up in the woods in this area and there were siting of the monkeys here and at night they would even through sticks and rocks at passing cars... there is also and old wood bridge on the road .... i have been done this road also at night and it is pretty creepy... And on the subject of the tunnels... ... there was a bomb shelter built under the courthouse... and they had these tunnels constructed way back that go under the city and lead to the bomb shelter under the courthouse... but after awhile the bomb shelter was sealed up and the tunnels were cut off from the courthouse... so now they say that rituals and cults hang in the tunnels... there are many entrances to the tunnels... and i have seen one of them with my own eyes.. it is in the basement of the athens country club and it is closed off... but me and a friend of mine use to work at the country club and we were helping them move some stuff around in the basement area and we moved this tall wood bookstand looking thing and there was a hole in the wall about the size of a plate... and we shined a flashlight in the hole and we seen a hall way with steps leading further downward..  and this i swear on my life... we did see this... and we asked the greens keeper about it cause he had been working there for MANY yrs and he said that is was the entrance to one of the tunnels in athens... and before i ever worked there i had heard stories about one of the entrances being at the country club... i have heard about other locations also but i never have seen an entrance besides the one at the country club... but all the entrances are at points... and they say that when the loop in finished... you can make the points on an athens map with the loop and it will make kind of a pentagram shape also... but i am not sure about that either... supposedly the courthouse in the center point... this is just some of the things i have heard about....and like i said i have witnesses some things myself so i do not doubt that something weird is going on in Athens....

Release the Kraken! Heh, when I was a kid there was a small church nearby that I thought was satanic because they frequently met at midnight. Years later I talked to someone that worked for them and found out that they were some crazy christian cult and not satanic at all. Whew, its amazing how the mind works when you don't have all the facts.

No one seems to have added to this forum in a long time, so interest may have died.

But to me, it's interesting. I lived in Athens a little over 20 years ago, and I was interested in the stories that the locals told us college students. 'even spent a few nights driving around and trespassing to see what I could see. I'll tell you what I saw personally and then what I was told.

I visited Fuller Park and saw the graves inside and the monkey cages that someone else photographed. I don't remember any graffitti, but there might have been some. I remember that Fuller Park gave me the creeps, but I can't prove that they were caused by anything but normal emotions.

I also visited the country club and saw the round concrete disk with a roof over it, next to the swimming pool. (Someone else has taken a photo which you can see at http://i38.photobuck....ctures013.jpg.) And one night friends of mine and I snuck into the lawn of a large house on Hwy 19 (east of the highway, heading south toward Palestine) and saw a large circle with a five-pointed star in it, constructed with what builders there call "natural rock." The thing had flowers planted among the lines of rock, but it was definitely a pentacle in shape.I r

Now, here's what I was told: early in the 20th century a very rich man moved to Athens from Dallas. He'd always wanted a castle on a hill overlooking a lake, so he bought some land and built both castle and lake. The castle later burned, but the cellars remained and the Athens Country Club is built over them. The "lake" (pond actually) and the land around it are part of the golf course.

This guy was supposedly an enthusiastic occultist (whether Satanic or pagan I don't know, but I do appreciate the difference), and he and some of the other local bigwigs formed a secret society which met in the basement of this "castle." The room also contained a sort of torture chamber, and a woman (the country club secretary) who worked then in those rooms claimed there were still bolts on the walls to which people would have been chained. The story goes on that the wife of this transplanted Dallas man disappeared, and that he bragged about killing her, knowing that he'd get away with it because no body would ever be found. The townspeople felt robbed of a trial and just lynched him.

I mentioned the circular patio and the pentacle in the yard above because they were details in the story. Supposedly, five of the prominent members of this society -- the man with the castle included -- had constructed at their homes a pentacle of stone, and if these five pentacles were plotted on a map of Athens and connected, they formed a large pentacle over the entire town. I remember we spent some time studying a map where we'd marked the two we knew of and trying to determine where to find the other three, but we never found any of them.

If anyone is still interested in this subject and lives in Athens, you might want to look up the secretary from the country club whom I mentioned. Her name was McIntyre, and in 1984 she lived on Colonial Drive. I'd heard she was collecting these stories and was planning on writing a book about the "secret society" in Athens, Texas.

Ok it's just a good idea to cite a source here. Part of the rules. :) I believe most cemeteries in the US face east but not all. Quite sure that no one is buried at right angles to each other in them as well.

Sorry to potentially derail this thread, but where do you get this from? This is something I've never heard of. Do you have any sources to back this up?
