UM-Bot Posted February 3, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 3, 2015 Has the famous woodchuck of 'Groundhog Day' fame ever managed to make an accurate prediction ? It was the bane of Bill Murray's existence in the 1993 Harold Ramis movie, but despite being an unlikely premise the actual Groundhog Day ceremony is a real thing that still takes place at the beginning of February each year. paperdyer Posted February 3, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 3, 2015 Give the poor groundhog a break! He gets a bad rap. He's keep in a glass home, inside and rousted out of his sleep, taken outside and taken out of his home for a few minutes just so us Pennsylvanians can have an all day party. Anyway, I like Phil is a Phyllis right now.
acute Posted February 3, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 3, 2015 I still don't understand this 'seeing his shadow' thing.
Space Commander Travis Posted February 3, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 3, 2015 It makes no sense to me, surely if he does see his shadow that means it must be sunny, so therefore winter will soon be at and end. Anyway, I expect they usually say there'll be weeks more of winter just to cover themselves. I wonder if anyone has ever sued him for getting it wrong?
bubblykiss Posted February 3, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 3, 2015 Cut the poor guy a break. He only has one job upon which the future is completely depending. Can you imagine that fellows stress levels?
Calibeliever Posted February 3, 2015 #6 Share Posted February 3, 2015 The celebration of Imbolc became two holidays over the last couple of centuries. The groundhog is actually an old symbol of weather divination. As many things do, this has been mashed together here in America. Below is part of an old old nursery rhyme ... "If Candlemas Day be fair and bright, Winter will have another flight If on Candlemas Day it be shower and rain, Winter is gone and will not come again. If Candlemas Day be damp and black, It will carry cold winter away on its back. If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, There’ll be two winters in the year."
Space Commander Travis Posted February 3, 2015 #7 Share Posted February 3, 2015 I'm trying to remember what it was yesterday. it was yesterday, wasn't it? Oh yes, it was fairly cold and bright, as I remember. Well, saying "Winter will have another flight" is a fairly safe bet, isn't it.
Sundew Posted February 3, 2015 #8 Share Posted February 3, 2015 The Hawaiian weather rock on a rope is much more accurate: If rock is warm, it will be sunny. If rock is wet, it will be raining. If rock is swaying, it will be windy. If rock is bouncing around, you will have an earthquake. If rock is white, it will be snowing. If you can't see the rock, it's nighttime or you have had too many Mai Tai Cocktails. Of course there is a very short lag time between the predictions and the weather event.

ineffectiveArtist Posted February 4, 2015 #11 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Okay, so this poor ground hog will go back in his hole if he sees his shadow? No, he goes back into his hole because of all the bloody people standing around taking pictures of him and screaming and whatnot! Complete rubbish, if you ask me. toast Posted February 4, 2015 #13 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Imagine that a TV broadcast of this event would be the first transmission recieved by an intelligent alien race: Hlgmpf: "Hey Mrxllf, we recieved a transmission from sector 2141-11-bb and it looks like they are intelligent, do wear clothes and are able to communicate verbally." Mrxllf: "Well thats interesting but it seems that their president is of a different species and much smaller than the other ones." Hlgmpf: "Will send a probe for clarification today." Space Commander Travis Posted February 4, 2015 #14 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Imagine that a TV broadcast of this event would be the first transmission recieved by an intelligent alien race: Hlgmpf: "Hey Mrxllf, we recieved a transmission from sector 2141-11-bb and it looks like they are intelligent, do wear clothes and are able to communicate verbally." Mrxllf: "Well thats interesting but it seems that their president is of a different species and much smaller than the other ones." Hlgmpf: "Will send a probe for clarification today." The President is a small creature, incapable of making any decisions by itself and with no real power, that's brought out every so often and manipulated by sinister figures in top hats, to make a meaningless pronouncement that's incorrect most of the time anyway, and is then put back again when the powers that manipulate him have no more need of it? Good analogy there.
