I'm not sure that mucking about with DNA is a good idea... Didn't these people see Jurassic Park?...

As long as they don't use Dino DNA.

I don't know enough about the risks, but on the BBC NEWS the reporter said it could eventually lead to "customising" babies, such traits as intelligence, athletic etc..

It should wipe out genetic defects and diseases linked to the mitochondrial dna.

It might pave the way for more stronger healthier people.

They'll have to get the costs (and risks) down first... I could easily see this becoming a "rich persons" tool kit for making "perfect" or "beautiful" babies, while everyone else has to take a chance

on natural genetics... But you are right... it SHOULD wipe out genetic defects...

The more we go against nature the more problems we'll face in the future. Genetic defects = Natural selection.

failing that wrap yourself in bandages, build yourself a Pyramid, add a bit of salt, sand resin = immortal.

The thread title, just like the title of the article linked to, is very misleading.

This is not a case of "3 parents". Each child has only the normal two parents, but the faulty mitochondrial dna of the female parent is replaced (either in the egg or the embryo) by healthy examples from a donor. It is similar in essence to an organ transplant.

The procedure is not "genetic modification" nor does it constitute a move towards 'designer babies' - as the nuclear DNA (i.e. the DNA that determines our individual characteristics) is unmodified.

People are always scared of new technology.

It will become common place to genetic engineer. It will start as a rich only thing until the price goes down.

The computer went through the same process. Most things do

Yeah, you could put kill switches in so we can keep having kids that stay children and never reach the teen years! Ever hear someone say, I wish you would just stay little! What , no- dont mourn the loss, another will be born just like it. Ohh, so that last one complained to much , well the next one will be more positive with a few tweeks.

Wouldn't it be a wonder thing to be able to eliminate birth defects. I wonder if all the people that are yelling "The sky is falling" have dealt with birth defects themselves or have friends that have dealt with them. My son-in-law's cousin has two such children. I don't see how she does it. I'd be in the looney bin or in a hospital with a complete breakdown. I only see the cousin at Christmas when I can get back to Pennsylvania. It's only for a few hours and sometimes that's more than enough. People say they understand what the families go through, but you really can't unless the unfortunate happens to you. If that's "natural selection", we need to do something about it. I usually try to look at things with a bit of humor, but the birth defects subject doesn't have a humourous side.

Well no-one asked for my vote... is that democratic?

It makes me laugh how people soil their panties over genetically modified foods, but have no problems with genetically modified humans.

Who are you to tell me i can't have a stegosaurus as a son?

Way to kill my dreams...

Perhaps it's "playing God" but if fatal congenital disease can be eliminated from human genetics there would be a lot less suffering of children. I am not suggesting aborting such a child, but rather fixing the problem which this technology claims to do. Let us hope that we use wisdom in the process and there are no unforeseen consequences.

I say Yes to GM food, Yes to GM babies and Yes to Professor Buzzkill having a Stegosaurus as a son.

It's only playing god if you believe in god.....as long as it doesn't make defects worse I'd GM my kids and myself now.

Well, I do believe in God, and since our DNA is a form of Code, it can (and does) get viruses that, like those in a computer, may alter the programing and created a less-than-desirable result, in this case genetic diseases. And since I believe, I also believe we have been given the intellect to do great things, but sometimes we get ourselves into trouble. So perhaps a bit a caution is warranted.

Remember the line in Jurassic Park: "That just because we can do something doesn't always mean we should."

being ginger isn't necessarily fatal.....

who are ginger.

why?

the phrase 'cruel to be kind' should apply if your child is afflicted with gingeryness.....

.

like a Ginger planet?

where Brunette's are ridiculed, Blondes are the butt of... Blondes are the butt of more jokes than they already are, and people with 'fro's automatically become president of whichever country is forthright enough to say "no!" to our titianary counterparts....

Anyone who spends as much time around today's children as i do would know that a lot of them could use a little genetic enhancing.

You don't start off as a parent hoping your kid has some kind of debilitating genetic disease. Sure if your child is born with one you love them all the same. Yet you wouldn't choose that for them. This is the most intelligent thing the British Government has done for a long damn time. If we start falling into some scary eugenics ****, we will notice, and if we don't stop it shame on us.

There's Mommy, and Daddy, and.... DNA donor???? Mito?

I'm assuming the mitochondrial DNA donor can be a man or a woman, right?

I thought the 3 parents meant that all 3 participants have rights on the child.

The procedure is not "genetic modification" nor does it constitute a move towards 'designer babies' - as the nuclear DNA (i.e. the DNA that determines our individual characteristics) is unmodified.

I'd argue that it is, if you get to pick the mitochondrial DNA donor, and I can't see them Not allowing that. If you get to pick traits of your baby, that is a designer baby.

EDIT: The PM vote has nothing to do with parent rights actually, just about the lifting of the medical ban on working on this DNA replacement procedure. Seems to me that the procedure isn't ready for general use yet.
