The infamous sanatorium is set to become a four-star hotel where people can stay and look for ghosts.

Originally opened in 1910 as a small two-storey building for housing tuberculosis patients, Waverly Hills was expanded significantly after an epidemic ravaged the population.

I hope to see some of those sanatoriums re-opened and put into good service. There are so many patients who can't live out of sanatorium.

If you have a good sleep, you get your money back!

That should be a written guarantee!

"You'd have to be crazy to stay here!"

"Nothing like a nice chilly room and doors that open on their own! "

There are some big issues that will “haunt” the rehab budget. Lead paint, wiring, plumbing and more than likely asbestos. Wonder if they plan to spend the enormous amount of money needed to make that place habitable or if they plan to cut corners?

I wouldn't feel scared knowing its history but I would feel terribly sad, and not want to stay there.

Same, why would anyone want to stay in a building that had so much negative energy attached to it..very sad..:(

Meeting live people from Kentucky is scary enough. I don't even want to think about what kind of ghosts live in their loony bins.

Most likely will cut the **** out of those corners. They just want to rake in as much money from it as possible, maybe they will leave the peeling paint and drafty windows for the aesthetic of the experience! To be completely honest, though, even then, I'd stay a night in it for the experience. IF it happened to be reasonably priced, that is.

Interesting....

Am aware on how the idea of grabbing tourists via a haunted location works, so it's not that bad an idea. But as has been mentioned above, giving the decay of the building, there's a heck of a lot of work needed to make the place look decent. Unless, of course,. there's only to be part of the sanatorium made into the actual hotel part, with a wing and some floors left in their current state for "atmosphere".

Since they will be using this as a hotel they will have to pass all current codes with the trades and all that. They can "cut corners" with the finishings but when it comes to all the other things you listed they will have to comply with whatever codes are in place for that area. It also would be wise to bring in a structural engineer to make sure all of the foundation and support beams are in good condition for all of the floors. There's no way to rehab or reno this for a commercial building without doing the proper things here; if they don't they will be shut down. This isn't a DIY project and professionals must be called in for this so I'm assuming they will have to fork out a pretty penny to get this place up and running and habitable :tu:

I'd stay there. It's just an old hospital really. I'd be happy to see a ghost.

I've worked in old hospitals. I don't see why people think they're automatically weird or scary or worthy of staying clear of.

I was an IT Tech in for a local govt. health department. We were based in a building on a hospital campus. Dead bodies being wheeled to and from the mortuary and the hospital was a regular and sad sight. One of the facilities we serviced was a 19th century hospital currently used as a psychiatric hospital including a previous abandoned wing retrofitted for admin offices.

It wasn't an unusual occurrence to be setting up someone's email or unjamming a crappy printer in an office and to have some weird but harmless psyche patient or confused elderly patient simply wander in and strike up a conversation or decided they worked there. Weird, strange but harmless people with mental issues. One old guy liked to wander in with a broom and decide it was his job to clean the office.

Sometimes they weirded me out as I wasn't used to dealing with those who were psychiatrically ill, but I was never bothered by the fact that the place I was working in was (in part) a mortuary or a psychiatric ward. The dead don't bother me. The living are much more of a concern as far as I'm concerned.

Hehe, that's kind of cute - some old guy coming into the office to start sweeping or someone else wandering over to strike up a conversation. They must feel lonely. I just have sympathy for them, I mean, most of them would've had proper lives at one time before their mental illness crept in. The 'sweeping guy' may have been an engineer for all we know - that sort of thing. Ordinary people.

I think when people hear the words "psychiatric ward" etc., they think of the criminally insane and that gives rise to all kinds of fantasies - evil spirits and such. Anyway, thank you for sharing that with me.

This has been in the works for a few years now, hasn't it? I mean, I could swear hearing about this at least a couple of years ago, plans to turn the place into a hotel.

The current owners bought it in 2001 and have been financing renovations from revenue from ghost tours and the like.

To me, the biggest issue is whether or not there's a large enough community of ghost hobbiests to keep such a large property profitable, especially when you're talking 4 star amenities. From what I understand about the location, you really wouldn't stay there for any other reason than the supernatural aspects of the place as it's not really conveniently located.

True it's not too conveniently located... but not too bad either. Just a few miles outside town and away from a large airport, snugged between a few major highways.. got a golf course right next store and some mall shopping and dining across the highway- all while still being surrounded by a lot of lovely woods. And there's a casino across the river in Indiana- though by the map looks like it's a bit of a mess to drive around to get across the river. Might be pretty nice for a resort kind of action if the place could be fixed up enough for it.

But I gotta agree that it does seem like it would appeal more to the ghost enthusiasts more than anyone else. At least with the way the place is right now.

And yeah, the owners have had it since 2001. Could have sworn watching a haunting show about the place years ago and they said they wanted to make it into a hotel way back then- but I got no idea what show or from when, so oh well. But it did come up a couple years ago, found an article about them filing for a zoning change- http://www.wdrb.com/story/21817706/owners-want-to-turn-waverly-hills-sanitorium-into-hotel-convention-center

I wish them well but don't know of anyone except a ghost hunter who'd want to stay there. Of course its possible they might. Several hotels in downtown San Antonio are haunted. The Menger ,St.Anthony, Crockett and Gunther hotels are,the oldest being the Menger which is right near the Alamo.

Saw in the local Seguin Gazette that the old Magnolia Hotel is going to be investigated by Ghost Adventures. It too is very old ,but don't recall anything about it being haunted. The one benefit it and the others mentioned have is they are located in town, one can drive there and walk around to various places. The ones in San Antonio you can for the most part walk to the San Antonio River Walk built during the 1930s and there are various bars, restaurants, and River City Mall to go to.

I'm not a that much into the ghostly part, but I wouldn't mind staying there so I could explore. I love historical buildings and this isn't the normal old hotel, mansion or castle.
