Still Waters Posted March 31, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 31, 2015 (IP: Staff) · At last, someone has found a practical real-world use for drones: a farmer in Ireland uses one to herd sheep. http://www.telegraph...g-sheepdog.html 1 Top

Stubbly_Dooright Posted March 31, 2015 #4 Share Posted March 31, 2015 Teach the Dog to use it and that will be something. Oh great! Now I have the permanent picture of a gleeful sheep dog with a RC thing-ma-of-a-bob in his hands and giggling. 1 Top
Sundew Posted April 1, 2015 #5 Share Posted April 1, 2015 Flying drones for now, but the real advancement will be a robotic dog. It will not have to be large, just have frills it can spread like a lizard, or flashing eyes or something that will get the attention of the sheep. It could be programed to keep the sheep within a certain area, even fitted with a predator deterring weapon of some sort. It could return to a charging station every night to be replaced by a "night-shift" robot for 24 hour guarding. It's true you cannot beat the loyalty and companionship of a dog, and a well trained herding dog is a wonder to behold, however this may give you the same protection or better for you livestock right out of the box with no training time, feeding or the inevitable death of your beloved animal in only a decade or so. DieChecker Posted April 1, 2015 #7 Share Posted April 1, 2015 Drones... Herding sheep since 2015.... Cool to watch, but it won't seriously replace dogs until they are autonomous.
Harry_Dresden Posted April 3, 2015 #8 Share Posted April 3, 2015 That drone will have no problems ewe-turning... or is it turning ewe's? 1 Top
