Royals Deny Harry Security Threat

Clarence House has denied Prince Harry has returned earlier than planned from Argentina due to a security threat.

Although they said they could not discuss specific security issues they did dismiss media reports of a kidnap plot as "irresponsible".

Harry spent most of November working on a polo farm in the Pampa area.

According to Argentine media reports, police officers on guard at the ranch heard shots early on Wednesday, but said they had come from poachers.

They responded by firing into the air, but said there was no danger, Argentine news website Clarin reported.

On Friday the Daily Mail said Argentine papers were reporting Harry's regular trips to nightclubs and bars had attracted the attention of criminals, who were plotting to kidnap him.

But the claim had come from a local man in prison facing a murder charge, and police were not convinced it was true, said the Mail.

A Clarence House spokesman has also denied "any suggestion of inappropriate behaviour" on the prince's part.

That came after the Sun newspaper claimed local papers had reported that Harry had gone to night clubs unattended, got drunk in pubs and went for a spin on a motorbike during his stay.

The prince spent most of his time at the ranch complex in Lobos - about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of the capital Buenos Aires - helping with the buying and selling of ponies and carrying out manual labour work.

Wednesday's incident reportedly took place after midnight when two shots from small bore weapons were heard by local police officers assigned to look after the area outside the ranch during his stay.

'Drunk in pubs'

Clarin website said the noise woke up neighbours but that Harry's four British minders, who were in charge of policing inside the ranch, had not been alerted.

Local government official Javier Guarnerio told the website: "It is very common that in this area at night people from the countryside go out to look for hares or otters.

"We are sure that is what this was."

He said he had since visited the ranch to make sure that Harry and his entourage were well.

"The prince seemed relaxed and tranquil - for him, nothing had happened," he added.

He is returning on the date that was booked when he left

A police search of the surrounding area had revealed nothing.

Another local official said he believed the poachers had been about 1500m (just under a mile) from the ranch outhouse where Harry was staying.

The Clarence House spokesman said he could not discuss security issues but that the prince had always planned to return on Friday.

The prince's knee was injured several months ago while training with the army ahead of his test for Sandhurst.

Harry had originally planned to spend four to six weeks in Argentina but this had been shortened because he had been advised that he could not ride with his injury, the spokesman added.

Harry will spend time privately in the run up to Christmas before starting at Sandhurst, along with 270 other cadets, on 9 January.
