Still Waters Posted June 4, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 4, 2015 Think you're safe from lighting inside your home? Think again. A Lake Travis High School student was struck by lightning while opening the fridge. Her dad was also injured and their house has noticeable damage. On Memorial Day, Macie Martinez and her parents had just come out of the pantry of their home in dripping springs where they had been taking cover during a tornado warning. Macie opened the refrigerator to grab a snack and lightning struck her home. http://www.myfoxaust...inside-her-home

Eldorado Posted June 4, 2015 #4 Share Posted June 4, 2015 There's a few stout folks could be doing with one of those fridges.
Wickian Posted June 4, 2015 #5 Share Posted June 4, 2015 If I ever get struck by lightning inside my house without any open windows, I would demand we stop and buy a few lottery tickets on the way to the hospital.
KariW Posted June 4, 2015 #6 Share Posted June 4, 2015 (edited) My husband thinks I/m crazy about being so frightened of thunder and lightning storms. I know the chances of getting struck are slim, but I don't like taking chances, so I usually hide in our bathroom or bedroom until the worst is over. I kind of felt safe inside our house, but now that feeling of safety has been shattered. That young lady and her father are so lucky to be alive! Buzz_Light_Year Posted June 5, 2015 #7 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Years ago I was in the milk house and lighting hit the silo and traveled down the grounding wires and I reckon it came back up through the ground and into the milk house and of course like an idgit I was leaning against the stainless steel milk tank and all it did was push me off the tank. Like a invisible hand pushing me. I didn't receive any shock at all and nothing like that poor girl. Another time my sister and I were sitting on the front porch about 10 feet from the TV antenna and lighting hit the antenna. The same time the flash went across in front of our eyes the hair raised up on our arms and I suppose our heads and a deafening boom followed. Now the weird part is the nearest clouds were at least 10-15 miles away and it was sunny where we were. I found out later that lighting can strike from 15 miles away and even on a clear day. What a lot of people don't realize is most lightning starts from the ground and goes up.
Patient Zero Posted June 5, 2015 #8 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Wow. Mother nature is a hell of a force. Now, if it were up to me, that girl would have inherited super powers.

BeastieRunner Posted June 5, 2015 #10 Share Posted June 5, 2015 We have a man on our board that's been struck by lightning twice. He likes to go meet other people that have been struck by lightning. Occasionally he meets a fellow fate-tester and they go out dancing in the next rainstorm! I'm glad she's okay.
acute Posted June 6, 2015 #11 Share Posted June 6, 2015 If a thunder storm was raging in the kitchen, and my last beer was in the fridge, I would take my chances.

The bathroom is a bad place to hide from lightning because of the plumbing. Harte
moon tide Posted June 6, 2015 #13 Share Posted June 6, 2015 It looks as if lightning doesn't care where you are these days. We must be very careful. Vigilant.

Sundew Posted June 9, 2015 #18 Share Posted June 9, 2015 I think the average odds of being struck by lightening are 1 in a million. Somewhat better where I live, in fact I received an indirect hit while using a radial arm saw in my basement. Sparks flew from every receptacle in the basement and if felt like someone hit me in the testicles with a hammer! Other than that I'm fine now. Other than that I'm fine now.
Robert1 Posted June 10, 2015 #19 Share Posted June 10, 2015 I think the average odds of being struck by lightening are 1 in a million. Actually, I believe it's closer to 1 in 70,000.
Hawken Posted June 10, 2015 #20 Share Posted June 10, 2015 Actually, I believe it's closer to 1 in 70,000. These are just averages. In some states the odds are greater. Florida for example which is the lightening capital will probably have greater odds.
