Mystery Disease A Significant Threat

FRANKFURT, Germany, March 16    Doctors on Sunday monitored a man believed to be the first in Europe infected with a mysterious respiratory illness that has spread rapidly in Asia and prompted a rare global health alert. GERMAN DOCTORS kept the unidentified man from Singapore, his wife and mother-in-law in quarantine while seeking to confirm whether they were infected with the illness known as Severe Acute Respiratory System, or SARS.

The 32-year-old man, who was taken off a Singapore Airlines flight Saturday during a stopover in Frankfurt, showed symptoms of pneumonia and was being treated with antibiotics, Dr. Hanns-Reinhardt Brodt said at a news conference. X-rays and lab tests showed the man, a doctor who was en route to Singapore from New York, had worsened slightly, Brodt said.

The man’s mother-in-law had a high fever but no other symptoms, while his pregnant wife showed no signs of infection, Brodt said. Health authorities say SARS has sickened 150 people and caused four deaths in recent days, mostly in Asia.

This is kind of frightening. I work with tourists all the time with one of the major drawbacks being , if they come over with a bug or flu or something , your chances of catching it are quite high.

I just hope my immune system has had enough of a battering to cope with some thing this bad.

It's not so much harms way as a fact of life KC . If a bus load of tourist's come in and they are all after Throaties and Panadol you know your in for something . biggrin.gif

I am probably better off than most people because I have been exposed to so many foriegn bugs .

But I'll be upping my vitamin dosage just in case smile.gif

Good news of a sort, doctors have indentified the virus that causes the mysterious illness. This discovery goes a long way to finding a viable treatment for those who may become infected.

I have an update on the mysterious disease case that

was near my area. There have been 2 more people

admitted to hospitals in my state since the one I reported

here. But all have been to Asia or China in recent weeks,

and health officials said that only immediate family and health

care workers were in any danger (so of course they're aware

of this and are taking precautions) As for the 3 patients, they

are doing well and slowly recovering (which I'm happy to report) smile.gif
