Anomalocaris Posted August 27, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2015 The disclosure this week on the precise fixing of age of the ancient wooden carved statue known as the Shigir Idol is seen as groundbreaking to our understanding of the pre-historic world. As first revealed by The Siberian Times, the haunting monument is 11,000 years old, according to leading German scientists. As such, it is more than twice as the age of the Pyramids of Egypt and the Stonehenge monument in the United Kingdom. The Idol - found in a peat bog in the Urals - is also 1,500 years older than previously thought by scientists, and the exact fixing of its age destroys theories by sceptics that it was not as ancient as its proponents believed. questionmark Posted August 31, 2015 #2 Share Posted August 31, 2015 (edited) A wooden statue pulled from a peat bog in Russia more than a hundred years ago is now believed to be twice as old as Stonehenge. The Shigir Idol, which found in the Ural Mountains in 1890, is thought to be 11,000 years old - making it the oldest wooden sculpture in the world. Depicting a man with mysterious symbols inscribed on him - which scientists believe could be an ancient encrypted code - the statue is 1,500 years older than previously thought. chubbya Posted September 1, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 1, 2015 A mysterious wooden statue covered in undeciphered markings is 11,000 years old, according to new tests -- or 1,500 years older than previously believed. That makes the Shigir Idol the oldest known wooden sculpture in the world, the Siberian Times reported. The idol is more than twice as old as the Great Pyramid of Giza, three times older than the ancient city of Babylon, and five times as old as Al Khazneh, the most famous of the ruins in the ancient city of Petra. Waspie_Dwarf Posted September 1, 2015 #6 Share Posted September 1, 2015 Thread merged and cleaned. May I make a suggestion, if you see a thread that needs merging press the report button and notify the moderating team rather than complaining within the thread and leaving the moderators even more work. +Hammerclaw Posted September 1, 2015 #7 Share Posted September 1, 2015 It has similar characteristics with that of totem poles. May have once been painted, too.
Dark_Grey Posted September 1, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 1, 2015 So this implies religious beliefs, correct? Which means established religion 11,000 years ago? In combination with sites like Gobekli Tepe and Gunung Padang, the "prehistoric" world is starting to seem a lot more established and culturally rich than we have believed until recently..at least, that's what I'm taking from this.
