seeder Posted August 29, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2015 Nasa starts year-long isolation to simulate life on MarsA team of Nasa recruits has begun living in a dome near a barren volcano in Hawaii to simulate what life would be like on Mars. The isolation experience, which will last a year starting on Friday, will be the longest of its type attempted. Experts estimate that a human mission to the Red Planet could take between one and three years. The six-strong team will live in close quarters under the dome, without fresh air, fresh food or privacy. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-34092770 Interesting test...not sure I could do it tho
Likely Guy Posted August 29, 2015 #2 Share Posted August 29, 2015 (edited) I could do it no problem by myself. Six people living in extreme close quarters is not isolation, by any stretch. Edit: I'm glad they're running these tests though. It indicates they're serious. Edited August 29, 2015 by Likely Guy

What if one had smelly feet? Or a pain in the ass attitude not identified before? Well I guess they work all that stuff out first. So, one year, No news, no radio, dried food, no net... . I guess they'll have some pre-recorded entertainment and music and projects to work on too Good luck to them! . ESA+ROSKOSMOS conducted such an experiment (Mars-500) in 2010/2011 involving 6 ppl isolated for 520 days in a tube shaped facility and without any daylight. Horror! http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/Mars500 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MARS-

Now you are just being Greedy. I'll give you Scarlett, Taylor and Jennifer, but you also have to take Diddy and Russell Brand. kobolds Posted September 4, 2015 #16 Share Posted September 4, 2015 unreality test. pointless if really want to do test, do it in deep sea . this way the recruits team will understand that, any leak or crack mean fatal . no one will be able to save them in time. not many people can stand the stress of having a thought that your life is on line every minutes , for a year , Depression and Anxiety Disorders will Damage Your Brain

Sorry but the only thing that is unrealistic and pointless here is your comment. The HI-SEAS simulation isnt intended to test technical systems, the simulation is to collect data about social facts like group behavior and psychological effects on humans during long-term space missions. Yr idea with a simulation at deep seas does not make any sense as a leak simulation test at deep seas would involve the intrusion of water, and an extreme increase of the pressure inside the habbitat, so such a test location would not make any sense as the HI-SEAS simulation is a Mars simulation and not a simulation for a mission into the oceans of Saturns moon Europa. not many people can stand the stress of having a thought that your life is on line every minutes , for a year , Depression and Anxiety Disorders will Damage Your Brain Thats what the HI-SEAS simulation is for, to investigate how humans behave and act in such situations and to find selection methods to be able to select the right ppl for long-term space missions.

nothingliz Posted September 10, 2015 #19 Share Posted September 10, 2015 What could be a great Idea is, to have an inflatable dome. Inflate first and then put together the interior. Or use nanites to build a dome from previously imbedded design specs. If it's possible to do so, also make the dome making nanites to make a dome that converts carbon dioxide into oxygen. As said earlier this is more of a test of people and how they cope than equipment.
