mr_halo Posted August 6, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 6, 2004 Well there have been a few stories, that suggest that the megalodon may still me in the oceans of the world, but i can't see something like that surviving that long and surviving extinction, but if anyone can provide any evidence of living megalodons, i'll change my mind... BurnSide Posted August 6, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 6, 2004 There was a huge forum about a WEEK ago on Megalodons. It was called 'Possibe Megalodon something something'. Living somewhere in a trench or soemthing. I suggest doing a search for it and reading through it.
BabyBash82 Posted August 6, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 6, 2004 What exactly are these megaladons supposed to look like? They're basically sharks, only two to three times larger than great whites. And yes, they were real, they found fossils of the teeth/jaw etc, they'd find more if sharks weren't all cartilage.
tendo Posted August 6, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 6, 2004 i think they still exist...theres alot for em to eat, and lots of stuff to eat their dead bodies...plus, crocodiles survived extinction, so y cant a shark that lives way down at the bottom of the ocean, thus being nearly unaffected by climate changes on the surface... Great Big Sea Posted August 6, 2004 #8 Share Posted August 6, 2004 My sister's bf Kevin said that on the Discovery Channell that they had a skull (the mouth) of a giant shark they could get eight guys in lab coats in side the mouth! Four sitting and four standing crazy huh? Years ago my mom was in Hawaii with a couple of girlfriends and they stopped by a tourist trap, were they had this big giant mouth of a shark craziess. Four sitting and four standing crazy huh? Sharks skulls are made of cartilage which disintergrates very quickly after death, no shark skulls or jaws ever last long in the wild. All that lasts is the teeth. On the jaw your talking about the only thing thats real is the teeth, the jaw itself is fake. In fact the lake of anything other than the teeth has led to an arguement of whether it looked like a giant greatwhite or giant blue shark. VampChilde18 Posted August 7, 2004 #11 Share Posted August 7, 2004 Megala whats it is obviosly extinct, for one thing it is a surface dweller (dwells within the upper layer of the ocean up to 200 ft) so it would have been seen before. Especially since its a predator and has to attck things. For anouther thing there is not enough food for a population to survive for very long without exaughting all resources. And third, ...... wel there was a third but i can't remember what it is just now.

Something like this, no? There are many hoax pictures having fun with the conception of a gigantic extinct shark returning to wreak terror... It's been speculated that such a creature could grow in lengths of 80+ feet. It's also been speculated that it just 'recently' became extinct at around 10,000 years ago. Creepy... Hawk7886 Posted August 7, 2004 #14 Share Posted August 7, 2004 I would imagine it would be a lot like looking into a Whale Shark's mouth, only wider and lined with huge three-inch long teeth...
Thanato Posted August 7, 2004 #15 Share Posted August 7, 2004 It would be cool if these sharks live for 1000 years by them selves and then you wouldnt need a big population, maybe a hundred or 200 and they could rome the Open ocien but not break surface that many times. ~Thanato

How could anyone possibly know that considering we've never seen one and can only go by its fossilised teeth. As for food... giant squid and Sperm Whales. LisaMHD Posted August 7, 2004 #17 Share Posted August 7, 2004 My theory as to the Megolodon, is that it MAY still exist. (Untill a white tooth is found, or someone photographs one, we'll never know for sure.) I believe the existance of Meg's is why noones ever seen a live giand squid, only dead or pieces of one. As another poster already stated, most of our vast oceans havent even been explored yet. WHO knows whats down there?? I noticed that some of the pics u guys posted come from Steve Alten's MEG fan site. Nice site. Anyone read Steve's third novel in the MEG series yet, Primal Waters?? I know it came out here in the US July 1st.
jenk Posted August 7, 2004 #18 Share Posted August 7, 2004 I have read a fiction book on the meg called THE TRENCH. It has a theory (which sounds possible) that the Meg is still alive and well in the Meranis (I know I spelt that wrong!) Trench 7 miles deep. The trench to this date has been explored roughly 1%, so it is possible that the meg survived the cooling oceans and loss of prey by diving deeper into the thermaly heated trench were god knows what else is still lurking that it could eat as a sub for it's old diet (gaint squid?/unlucky sperm whales?/exploring aliens?/Crazed robots from hell on crack? who knows!). BabyBash82 Posted August 9, 2004 #21 Share Posted August 9, 2004 I believe the existance of Meg's is why noones ever seen a live giand squid, only dead or pieces of one. I'm pretty sure we most commonly find the pieces of them inside sperm whale stomaches, so it's probably because A. Sperm whales can go down far enough to get the giant squids, we can't -- and B. Sperm whales are the ones who are actually eating them, not megalodons.
hitbox Posted August 9, 2004 #22 Share Posted August 9, 2004 I remeber reading somewhere, back when i was younger and loved sharks and stuff, that megalodons evolved(or de-evolved if you want to look at it one way) into the great white shark. Which is a pretty good and sensible theory if you think about. Loook at the similarities between the teeth, obviously the megalodon's is bigger but the shape is almost identical. They said why it evolved was becuase its food source. I can't remeber what exactly the reason or what happened, maybe it was that the food either got smaller or moved to different parts it couldn't due to climate. So as it had less to eat, it couldn't grow as big. Over time i guess it adapted to this and naturally they couldn't grow as big. All though who knows, maybe some adapted to live it the deeper depths of the ocean so they could eat giant squid, whales, and what not.
cor_raven Posted August 9, 2004 #23 Share Posted August 9, 2004 i think that its not around anymore crocodiles have suvived but they changed alot so its resonable that megalodons just evolved instead of going extinct
BurnSide Posted August 9, 2004 #24 Share Posted August 9, 2004 Maybe they evolved into our Great Whites?
matthewgoad Posted August 9, 2004 #25 Share Posted August 9, 2004 I live in North Carolina, and they have found many teeth, that are believed to be from the Megladon in some Salt Water/ Fresh Water mixed rivers. You can buy them in alot of the stores towards the beaches. They are about a foot long or a little less. Very cool though, if anyone is interested..
