'Catastrophic' Engine Failure in BA Jet Fire

A British Airways plane bound for London with 170 people on board has burst into flames on the tarmac at Las Vegas Airport.

The Boeing 777-200 was preparing to take off shortly after 4pm (local time) on Tuesday when its left engine caught fire, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

The 157 passengers and 13 crew were evacuated using emergency slides as around 50 firefighters tackled the blaze, while 13 people were treated in hospital for minor injuries and have now been released from hospital.

General Electric added that the type of engines used on the plane "(are) among the world's most reliable engines" and "we are not aware of any operational issues that would hazard the continued safe flight of aircraft powered by these engines".

I wouldn't label it as "catastrophic" as no one was killed and the overall danger was actually minimal.

I dont think that the incident was caused by engine fire. Looking at the pics below, the left engine seems to be quite

intact and the most damage is at the wing root. And looking at the hole in the fuselage it can be seen that the edges

of the hole are bended to the outside. I would say there was maybe a kind of explosion inside the A/C that maybe

damaged the wing tank connection tubes, resulting into the fire.

Yes, it looks to me like the fuselage and not the engine, but ? From Norbert's linked video it doesn't look like the passengers are moving away from the plane very fast. If the fuel tanks would have ignited there may have been casualties.

All the complete idiots who took their carry on luggage while evacuating. They should be fined heavily to deter it happening again in the future.

He's American. He was the Southwest driver, not the BA. But commercial pilots are generally calm in crises.
