Anomalocaris Posted September 18, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 18, 2015 This skintight ‘invisibility cloak’ is able to hide any 3-D object — as long as it’s super tiny We're one step closer to Harry-Potter-style invisibility cloaks. In a study published Thursday in Science, researchers report the first ever success in cloaking 3-D objects regardless of their shape. Use your brain Posted September 19, 2015 #2 Share Posted September 19, 2015 rendering a microscopic object invisible to the eye I was hoping for a bit more, but hopefully now they will get the funding to scale this up. This sounds like it is going to be insanely expensive to scale this up to a size that would be appropriate, but it could be worth it in some limited applications.
Nnicolette Posted September 19, 2015 #3 Share Posted September 19, 2015 (edited) I remember a brief clip on the news in to 90s showing soldiers and tanks cloaked in the existing technology on the battlefield. All you could see is maybe a distant ripple like a heat wave and it was one of those news announcements that i was really interested to learn more about but then the info dissapeared into obscurity. It really makes me wonder what else has been made in the last 20 years that we arent being told about yet. libstaK Posted September 19, 2015 #6 Share Posted September 19, 2015 Excellent, I suggest using it to make Donald Trump invisible. Meh, we really need the technology to make him mute for that to do any good.

theotherguy Posted September 19, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 19, 2015 Why is every project that deals with invisibility immediately--within the first sentence of the article--compared to Harry Potter? I understand the pop culture reference, I'm just getting tired of it. I feel like I can write a complete article template by now.

H132 Posted September 20, 2015 #10 Share Posted September 20, 2015 Am I the only one that notices that this same article has been posted on this and other sites various times over the past year and yet it has nothing at all to do with visibility? It's just a simple lense trick that even i was doing with telescope lenses when I was 12 years old (32 years ago) and it is insanely stupid how this keeps impressing people today. I can only assume that this site is just running out of ideas for things to talk about.

If was writing the article I would definitely reference the Sheila's 'Cloak of the Thief' from Dungeions & Dragons over another Harry Potter reference.

Or indeed the "Mantle of Invisibility" as described in the tale Culhwch and Olwen (c. 1100) as one of King Arthur's most prized possessions.[1]
