Hahahah. Interesting!

I hope that's not a bad thing lol.

I guess the Austrians, especially the mountain dwelling ones, are a pretty distinctive mix. Celtic, Italian,  German, Slavic and gods know what else was living in the Alps. I have a friend from Linz (Upper Austria) who regularly gets mistaken for Italian or Spanish.
The native mythology is also a very interesting symbiosis of Roman, Celtic, German and Slavic ideas and while the country is very Catholic, Christianity never quite managed to demonify the Elves, Dwarves and Goblins that populate the Alps as it did in the northern parts of the German world.  Austrian Fairies (which are closer to English Elves) are always benevolent, beautiful women who visit babies and bestow gifts upon them, they never steal children or torment people.
My Grandmother knew so many tales about those spirits.

The "Fairy Godmothers" are right out of Baltic and Slavic mythology. Bestowing gifts on newborns.

Huh, here I always thought they were adapted from the Roman Fates. But it makes sense. Austria has had a strong Slavic influence for centuries, it also shows in the local dialects in many places. Another Slavic Import in Austrian Folklore is the Forest Giant Rubezahl (Turnip Counter) a (mostly) benevolent spirit of the wild forests and mountain peaks of the Alps. His name is, irrc a corruption of his original Slavic name, but like it happened with Aphrodite in Greek Mythology, the Austrians made up a story to explain his name. He had abducted a princess to marry him and to provide guests for the wedding he transformed turnips into people. The Princess tricked him by saying that she wanted to know exactly how many turnips he had, so that she would know how many guests she could expect at her wedding. He had so many that he spent several days counting them, enough time for the princess to escape.
