NOAA expedition captures rare deep-sea squid

Researchers off the coast of Hawaii captured spectacular footage of a type of squid rarely seen alive. (Video via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)

What you see is known as a whiplash squid. The film was released in September but is just now getting popular.

Very nice!

You know, sea life has always fascinated me, though I don't know much about it beyond the average person.

And new discoveries or new observations of known creatures, especially in deep sea environments is of particular interest to me.

I wish we would put just as much into a deep sea program as we do space (and I love all the recent scientific discoveries in space, too!) ... makes you wonder what we would find.

The article states that the squid species in question has an organ that can emit a bright burst of light... presumably to stun prey.

Amazing. Tried to see if that was on the vid. Wonder if some other vid shows that.

Deep sea life is particularly impressive because it's so alien to anything on land, or in the shallow seas for that matter.

Some species of smaller squids can shoot out a "packet" of luminous ink, this "packet" catches the attention of a predator, and while the predator is preoccupied with the "packet", the squid can make its escape.

I love thinking about how vast the ocean is and how much we have left to explore. It keeps the wonder alive, you know? I mean, it's also a little unnerving, but it's exciting.
